Phineas nn Finn?

So DH and I can't agree on the spelling / name and we're close to vito the whole name but it's one of the few we both like so help please.

We don't know (& not finding out) if we're having a boy or girl so it may not be relevant.

If baby is a boy I like Finn (DH has vito this) he has said Finn is a shortening and so we need a 'full name'. I like Finley (DH doesn't). DH likes Phineas but I want 'Finn' boy Phin. I said we could do Finneas but he's said no!

Can we do Phineas nn Finn or is that just weird?

Our eldest is Maximus nn Max so looking for something in keeping.

We also have NO girl names so any suggestions welcome because neither of us can agree!

Phineas is nice.

But I wouldn't shorten to Finn it would be a pain with his initials - F Surname or P Surname

How about
Finley - Finn
Theodore - Theo
Quentin - Quinn
Sebastian - Seb
Frederick - Fred

Phineas is an amazing name! So strong and cool and rare and biblical and just generally great. Finn is the obvious nickname, I like Finn, but absolutely hate Finley which I think sounds a bit wet and weak and it's been done to death in my opinion. It's not a big deal to just spell the name Phin, surely? But Finn is fine. I know an Elizabeth who goes by Betsy, no issue. Charlottes who are Lotties. A Josephine who is an Ephy. There are countless classic names whose nicknames begin with a different letter or are even totally different to the full name! It's not been a problem for any of them.

Maximus and Phineas sound amazing together.

Finneas spelling is awful and made up (sorry), if you're going to spell it like this I think it's better to use another name.

toastofthetown · 03/04/2022 09:12

I'd use Finn as the nickname rather than Phin. It looks nicer, it's the spelling most people will assume and autocorrect won't try and change it to Thin! It don't think diminutives need to match initials-wise with the full name: Catherine - Kitty/Kate; Edward - Teddy; William - Billy; Elizabeth - Lizzy/Beth.

For girls names, have you consider a name matching app? The Kinder one is good, but I'm sure there are others which work just as well. You swipe on the names you like and if your husband also likes it, it will add it to a shared list. If there are names you really like, you can add them too so you husband will seem them. As you both do it independently it might break the pattern of disagreeing.

Finn is a name in its own right, I have a boy called Finn in my nursery. Phineas is very old fashioned, and it would be strange going from Phineas to Finn as it’s a different starting initial,

Like it's weird going from Elizabeth to Lizzie Victoria to Tori Christopher to Kit William to Billy

Etc etc etc.

As for the name being 'old fashioned' - sure, it's a strong biblical name. Old fashioned names are extremely popular right now! I think the majority of the top 100 names are either biblical or very old classics.

Grumpasaurusrex · 03/04/2022 09:27

As for girls names that go with Maximus, I'd choose something equally strong and old.

Jemima
Octavia
Tabitha
Phoebe

Justkeeppedaling · 03/04/2022 09:29

I love Phineus too, and Finn is fine for a nn.
How about Finnegan as a full name? Something like Finnegan Jones sounds great.

Justkeepon · 03/04/2022 09:46

Finn is a name in its own right, it can also be spelt Fionn

DotDotDotDotDot · 03/04/2022 09:52

Phineas/Finn is nice and goes well with your sons name.
My favourite Finn name is Fintan, although it’s maybe a different style to Maximus.
I really like Nathaniel/Nate at the moment too.

Lilaclavenders · 03/04/2022 09:54

Why does Phineas need to be shortened? It's a lovely name that's easy to say.

The natural shortening would be Phin.

Having the same initial is helpful imo. He'll always be known as Mr P Surname!

StrawberrySanta · 03/04/2022 09:58

I know a baby Phineas, shortened to Phin. But I prefer Finn spelling as the shortened version. I think go for it

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/04/2022 09:59

Phineas nn Finn Is fine

It’s no different from Catherine nn Kate, Elizabeth nn Beth, Libby, Dominic nn Nick etc

Phineas is fabulous, Finn is a natural short form and it’s how people will spell it anyways.

Fineas is weird though. Don’t do that.

koalalala · 03/04/2022 12:00

Thanks everyone. Sounds like we could do Phineas nn Finn without much hassle. When they're older they can chose that they're known by obviously, and what spelling they use.
When compared to Elizabeth / Lottie / Lizzy it makes more sense so thanks!!
That would be a good compromise I think, something we both like.

Nice, cool name. It works.

MarmiteCoriander · 03/04/2022 12:27

I'm not British and not familiar with the name Phineas and initially read it as Pee-neas! This alone would out me off using it, but if people can pronounce it correctly and you like it- then go for it. I agree- why choose a name to then just use a nickname?

I like Finn or Fynn, so would just use that- but I realise your DH doesn't like it.

Ph is pronounced like F in English - like Philip etc

I think that's more a one-off mistake than something that would happen often 😂 the 'phi' is a very easy to read and pronounce sound to British people and would never be mistake for a 'pee' sound.

Hmm, only ever heard the name Phineas in the context of famous neurological patient Phineas Gage (sound a bit niche but probably on psychology a level). Not a great association but admittedly niche.

Smurf123 · 03/04/2022 14:03

I have a 4 year old so all I can think of when I hear Phineas is Phineas and Ferb the kids cartoon sorry.

I love Finn though but I'm in Northern Ireland Finn is a fairly popular name.
You could spell it Fionn too, or Fintan if you wanted a longer name then nickname Finn. Though I prefer just Finn as the name

notanicepersonapparently · 03/04/2022 14:25

Phineas Finn? That's a great novel by Anthony Trollope about an Irish MP who stands up for tenants rights but looses the support of his party.

TenThousandSpoons · 03/04/2022 15:20

Finbar?
But just Finn is good. Or Flynn.
I agree with you that Phineas nn Finn could be confusing. It’s not like Catherine/Kitty or Charlotte/Lottie it’s more like Catherine/Kath. The exact same sound but different spelling.

I know a Finn who is actually a Finn but lovingly gets called finnigan! It's a fab name

Phineas Fogg??
Indiana2021 · 03/04/2022 19:56

Phineas (sp. Finneas in his case) has just won an Oscar for best song and is Billy Eilish' songwriting brother.
You might find a few more Phineas' or Finneas' popping up soon!

WeasilyPleased · 03/04/2022 23:01

I really like Phineas and Phin/Finn is the natural shortening.
You'd need something properly grand to stand up to Maximus so how about
Evangeline
Angelica
Hermione
Persephone
