Phineas nn Finn?

So DH and I can't agree on the spelling / name and we're close to vito the whole name but it's one of the few we both like so help please.

We don't know (& not finding out) if we're having a boy or girl so it may not be relevant.

If baby is a boy I like Finn (DH has vito this) he has said Finn is a shortening and so we need a 'full name'. I like Finley (DH doesn't). DH likes Phineas but I want 'Finn' boy Phin. I said we could do Finneas but he's said no!

Can we do Phineas nn Finn or is that just weird?

Our eldest is Maximus nn Max so looking for something in keeping.

We also have NO girl names so any suggestions welcome because neither of us can agree!

I know of two Phineases who go by Finn. Like others have said - William/Billy, Charlotte/Lottie, Albert/Bertie. Perfectly normal to have the every day name start with a different letter.

Minster2012 · 04/04/2022 12:10

I know a Fintan? Nn Fin
I think maximus & Phineas is a bit too much with the similar endings

DebtheSander · 04/04/2022 12:48

I was about to suggest Fintan/Finton. I know a lovely boy called Finton nn Finn.

Girls names…Harriet, Martha, Fiona, Charlotte, Florence?

I love Phineas, ive never known how to spell it correctly though and always thought it was spelt Phinneus. I much prefer it with the Ph at the beginning rather than Finneas. Isn't one of Julia Roberts twins called phineas?
And Yes I think it will definitely grow in popularity due to Billie Eilish's brother. I've always liked it. Finn is fine as the NN it doesn't necessarily have to be Phin.

I love Phineas - hadn't thought of it before when choosing baby names but it is totally giving me all the feels! And Finn makes a lovely nickname, I can't see the issue.

Alternatively I know of a boy called Finnick - which I had assumed would be shortened to Finn tho he happens to still known as Finnick. It's a lovely name and unusual too

TatianaBis · 04/04/2022 19:26

The Phineas I know is Phin.

If you want him to be Finn call him Finn.

birthdaywanker · 04/04/2022 20:19

Phineas nn Finn is lovely! The main character in the novel A Separate Peace (American classic, not as well known over here) is called Phineas, but is known to everyone as Finny. I really like it.

Buttercup54321 · 05/04/2022 22:06

Finton
Frazer
Finbar
Phillip

Really dislike Phineas.

Viviennemary · 05/04/2022 22:10

Phineas is beyond dire. Why would anybody saddle a child with a name likd that. Finn is OK but not keen personally.

mumofEandE · 05/04/2022 22:32

How about Fintan?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 06/04/2022 10:54

@Justkeeppedaling that was Phileus Fogg (nn Phil ?!)

bigyellowTpot · 06/04/2022 19:44

80 days around the world phileus fogg. 1980s cartoon! showing my age lol

DogsAndGin · 06/04/2022 20:15

😂😂😂😂

CalmDownBoris72 · 07/04/2022 21:13

My Phineas goes by Phin most of the time. I love his name.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/04/2022 11:30

Finn is a full and proper name in its own right. Just because a name is short that doesn't make it a shortening.

Nnique · 08/04/2022 11:33

As pp said, Finn absolutely is a name in its own right. I’m Scandinavian and I like the name a lot.

However I do like Phineas and Finn makes a good diminutive so either way is good in my book!

Nnique · 08/04/2022 11:34

However to be clear, Finn is my preferred option by a very long way. If you like it, use it! Your DH is incorrect about it being a nickname.

Palavah · 08/04/2022 11:35

Why can't you do Phineas/Phin?

Gibbonfaced · 08/04/2022 11:36

Phineas, as in Phineas and Ferb? :)

Lilaclavenders · 08/04/2022 13:37

I’m Scandinavian and I like the name a lot.

Is it because you're a Finn from Finland?Grin

Nnique · 08/04/2022 13:45

Grin Grin

Wrong country and wrong sex! But I do have a good friend whose name is Finn.

I think it’s a good name to use in the U.K. because it’s not got any weird spellings/sounds, is easy to pronounce and sounds good to the ear from an English perspective.

DancingBarefootOnIce · 08/04/2022 15:28

How often do you write down nicknames? There are no rules about nicknames. You get people with completely random nicknames and so you can spell how you like.

I love Phineas but it's too daring for me to use but love others doing it.

bellamountain · 08/04/2022 16:51

Finn on its own is a lovely name.

Blackberrybunnet · 08/04/2022 17:17

Finneas is better as the longer version of Finn. How about Finbar/Finian/Thorfinn?

Blackberrybunnet · 08/04/2022 17:18

Finn is a name on its own ... anglicised spelling of Fionn (see Fionn McCool)
