Please help! I'm due in August and we are keeping the sex a surprise ☺️ We have picked out our boy name but really struggling to find a perfect name for a girl. I'm not too keen on choosing a name that is overly feminine and want to stay away from names in the top 20. I really like the name Rowan but not sure if she would be teased for having a boy's name. What's your thoughts on Rowan (please be honest) or do you have any other suggestions. Thanks ❤️

I like it. I don’t see it as a boy’s name.

Fraaahnces · 02/04/2022 09:01

I really like it, but then again it’s also the name of my two of my friend’s sons. I also know a couple of girls called Cameron too.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 02/04/2022 09:21

I really like it for a girl.

TempsPerdu · 02/04/2022 10:00

It’s DD’s middle name, and was very nearly her first. We liked it because of the nature connection (we both love rowan trees) and the fact it sounded strong and not frilly.

Much prefer it for a girl than for a boy. The official stats show that it’s currently very trendy for boys (along with Roman, Rory etc) but both of the babies we’ve come across with this name recently have been girls. It is genuinely unisex.

Smurftastic · 02/04/2022 10:26

What about Rowena?

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2022 10:29

Rowan is more commonly used for boys but it's definitely unisex. I prefer it on a girl, actually.

Electrox · 02/04/2022 10:30

I'm not too keen, love Rowena though

Amdone123 · 02/04/2022 10:31

I love it too.
I prefer names like Rowan on girls, too, as per pp.
Blake, Ryan, Reese, Cameron - I love for girls, but not for boys.

dontblameme · 02/04/2022 10:36

My cousin's DD is Rowan pronounced Roh-un. Both pronunciations are nice but you would have that question a lot.

ButterRose · 02/04/2022 10:48

I love it for a little girl it's a very unisex name

KylieCharlene · 02/04/2022 10:51

I see it as a feminine name but I don't like it. To me it's one of those names that's a bit of a fad- a bit like Wren.

duck3914 · 02/04/2022 11:03

I have a female friend called Rowan and she really suits it! I don't know anyone who thought her name was a little strange, if you like it then go for it! More and more "unusual" names are found nowadays anyway.

merryhouse · 02/04/2022 11:28

I'm not sure I know what you mean.

Phonetic spelling is tricky on-line, what with so many regional variations... are you thinking you might stress the second syllable, so it's more like Joanne?

I would expect everyone to pronounce the name the way they personally pronounce the tree, and not worry about it beyond that. If you want it pronounced slightly differently you need to change the spelling (eg Rowanne).

Liv999 · 02/04/2022 12:04

I'm in Ireland and its exclusively a boys name here, but I know its unisex in other places, I much prefer it on a boy but it does suit a girl too

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 02/04/2022 12:08

I love it for a girl-def think of it as more of a girls' name
I have a friend called Rowan so maybe that's why but I think very pretty!

ShowOfHands · 02/04/2022 12:11

I know 3 boys called Rowan but wouldn't be surprised to meet a girl with the name. It's unisex nowadays.

theflippantpenguin · 02/04/2022 12:13

I love it for either sex, and don't think anyone would tease her for having a boy's name.

Enko · 02/04/2022 12:26

I dont like unisex name (have one myself and its a pain) so its a no from me for that reason

Synchrony · 02/04/2022 12:27

I don't think she'd be teased as it's gained popularity for girls, although personally I hate boys names being claimed by girls and subsequently dropping out of favour for boys. I only know boys called it but none are children.

ronjobbins · 02/04/2022 12:29

It’s lovely, the only Rowan I know is a woman.

SingleHandSue · 02/04/2022 12:31

It was on my list if DS was a girl 21 years ago so defo not a fad name. I’d met a couple who had a gorgeous red haired 4 yo DD with the name.

I also know a 20 yo man called Rowan but think it’s much nicer for a girl.

Twizbe · 02/04/2022 12:58

My mum has a unisex name. It can be tricky and there have been several times when it's been very awkward.

The main one was when she went for surgery for fibroids but was put on a male ward because of her name (despite it being spelt in the feminine way)

Aria999 · 02/04/2022 13:59

I see it as a girls name. I like it. I like tree names generally actually.

Yika · 02/04/2022 14:03

I’ve always seen it as a girls name as I knew one growing up in the 1970s. I like it.

fancyfrogs · 02/04/2022 14:05

I like it, the only Rowan I know is a little girl.

Don't like Rowena
