Naming twins

amybradburn95 · 27/03/2022 22:49

We don't know the gender of our twins yet, but my husband and I have been considering names for them. We already have an Atla and an Arlo. I'm Amy and he's Alex.

We're unsure of if we should stick with the 'A' theme or be different as they can have names that start with the same letter anyway. Would love to hear your opinion and any name suggestions (we like non-traditional names - not weird but not common either).

I wouldn’t give them names starting with the same letter, they are already twins, that’s enough matching.

I feel as if I'd have to give them at least the same letter, if not all of us. It would feel weird having 4 A's and then 2 different letters haha - might just be me being strange

Personally I'd move away from the A theme because I know some families where everyone has names beginning with the same letter and I find it really hard to remember them! They all sound so similar to my ear.

If you stay with A, I'd say at least have a different number of syllables / emphasis on different syllables. Like maybe Amaryllis and Anne or something to break up the two syllables.

Then again, I am not someone who would names twins with the same letter anyway.

I've only just realised we've all got the same number of syllables in our names as well haha - well Alex is an Alexander but that's a really good point if we were to stick with the A theme, would have to find longer/shorter names

Definitely a different letter! Bit twee otherwise and you really reduce your options of thousands of names just by deciding to stick to one letter.

WomblingWilma · 27/03/2022 23:07

All our DC’s names start with the same letter. The first 3 were not by design, then decided the 4th couldn’t be left out Grin. Names do not sound similar. DH and I have different initials.

I like it, they trip off the tongue easily when reciting them all.

Bit of a pain when you start getting letters addressed to Mr A Smith (for eg) and you’ve got 3 of them though!

3girlsmama · 27/03/2022 23:10

I'd switch from the A theme as two more could be a bit ott, imo & detract from the impact of each individual name - it becomes an 'A list'... I'd also go for two different letter names, which I think would nicely balance out the A names & complement them all. (I have girl twins with different letter & syllabal names). Maybe a B & C name if you want to continue the alphabet!

LizzieBet14 · 27/03/2022 23:12

Definitely different initials.....Hmm

whattodo235 · 27/03/2022 23:13

I know it’s the same letter which isn’t ideal, but surely it’s got to be Apollo and Artemis? Twins, Greek mythology, uncommon and beautiful…

whattodo235 · 27/03/2022 23:15

… if it’s a boy and a girl, that is. If it’s two girls I’d go Hero and Olympia. Two boys I’m not sure…

DoucheCanoe · 27/03/2022 23:34

I wouldn't, I was the only one with a different initial in my house of 4 growing up and i was happy with that as it meant no one ever opened my mail by accident Grin

I also have twin siblings who were born after I moved out and they absolutely hate having matching anything as people always just lump them together as a pair so any big of individuality is important to them.

That would be the only thing with having the same letter haha - at the moment we have a mrs, mr, miss and master so it's okay 😂 glad I'm not the only one with all the same letters

Those are actually really lovely names

I met a nurse once who had twins. She told she regretted giving the same first initial as it caused problems for them with banks and when they applied for driving licenses there was an issue as it looked like a fraudulent applications as their NI was one digit different as well.

I’m going to go against the grain and say you should go for names beginning with A. You started it, you need to commit now Grin I think it’s sweet. Also I think in some ways it would be worse to give them matching names with a different letter. As if because they are twins they are different from the rest of the family.

DoucheCanoe · 28/03/2022 08:40

I know a family who all have the same, they are referred to as the Kardashian clan in our area - the names don't start with K but it's still a "thing". That would be enough to put me off the idea personally 🤣

comealongponds · 28/03/2022 08:52

Don’t go with A names, all six of you with the same initial would be ridiculous

If you don’t want 4 As and 2 random letters then use the same letter for both twins, just not A.

axolotlfloof · 28/03/2022 08:58

Give them separate initials to you all and each other.
Also don't make them too rhymey or a pair
They are already twins, and individuals.
Choose them some great individual names you love.

ButterRose · 28/03/2022 09:00

I wouldn't go for 'A' names but definitely choose the same first initial for them both... personally I would choose 2 different sounding names and different meaning names with your only theme being the same initial ie: Bruno and Bennett or Caspian and Conrad. Just pick your favorite name/sound/letter and work from there ensuring that all your kids names sound good together when called out.

AuntieStella · 28/03/2022 09:36

I don't think I'd have gone down their path.

But as you have, my fist thought was of the fan nicknames fir the Corrie twins - Aldi and Asda

Other 2 syllable A names:

Asher, Abner, Abram, Aaron, Aidan, Alan, Aldous, Austin, Anton, Arnie, Asaph, Aubrey

Abbie, Ada, Adele, Afra, Agnes, Aileen, Aisling, Alma, Anis, Annette, Avril, Astra, Astrid

Lavendersquare · 28/03/2022 09:45

Definitely avoid the all names start with A, it's all a bit Kardashian and twee.

I think they names need to go together and sound like a good combination rather than actually starting with the same letter.

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 28/03/2022 09:45

Aspen and Anya

seadreams · 28/03/2022 13:54

Going against the grain, I love the A theme! Also like the using 2 B names idea though.

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2022 16:30

Just call the twins the same name. It needs to start with an A. Alexandra or Amelia and Amos or Alastair
