Naming twins

We don't know the gender of our twins yet, but my husband and I have been considering names for them. We already have an Atla and an Arlo. I'm Amy and he's Alex.

We're unsure of if we should stick with the 'A' theme or be different as they can have names that start with the same letter anyway. Would love to hear your opinion and any name suggestions (we like non-traditional names - not weird but not common either).

@Holly60

I’m going to go against the grain and say you should go for names beginning with A. You started it, you need to commit now Grin I think it’s sweet. Also I think in some ways it would be worse to give them matching names with a different letter. As if because they are twins they are different from the rest of the family.
I hadn't thought of it like that

It's not going against the grain, it's going against the flow

DoucheCanoe · 28/03/2022 16:51

I would disagree that they will feel put out by being different.

I think they'll thank you for it! They're going to have a lifetime of being "them", "the twins" and potential mix ups with their names as it is - giving them they're own initial is showing that you view them as an individual rather than a unit.

cherryonthecakes · 28/03/2022 16:52

I'd go for A names but different types of name so something like Anya and Artemis or Austin and Arabella (different lengths and style)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/03/2022 16:59

Can you go for a different letter but the same for both of them? But a letter which can be pronounced differently.

Charlton and Celeste
Charlton and Cosmo
Celeste and Corinne

Or something where the letter is the same but a NN would be different

Annabelle nn Bella, with Andrew nn Drew
Matilda nn Tilly with Menton nn Tony
Elizabeth nn Betty with Edward nn Ted

I have twins, tbh I wouldn't give either of them a name beginning with A but something different for each that's just there's. They have to share everything from the moment they're born so I take any opportunity to give them something of their own. Good luck, twins are great xxx

Theirs!

My brother and his wife both have A names, then their eldest is an N, and the youngest another A. I had never even thought about it until I read this thread.

OP, I think you should pick names you really love regardless of the initials. It would suck to fall in love with a name then be like "oh, can't use it, it starts with an H..." Pity also to cut yourself off so many options. Most people never think twice about initials.

(I was baffled for a long time by MN's hate of matching initials, until I realized that apparently in the UK you get a lot of mail addressed to Initial Lastname... In my country it's usually sent to Firstname Lastname so it really doesn't matter. Even so, frankly I think it is a non issue ! I doubt your children will care one way or the other).

Nosetickle · 28/03/2022 21:39

If your names all start with the same letters aren’t you always going to be opening each other’s post?!

Anyway, ideas…
Abel
Ashley/Ashleigh
Abigail
Adam
Astrid
Alison
Alice
Annabelle
Andrew

SnowdropFox · 29/03/2022 15:05

I personally wouldn't stick with A. The twins won't even notice, you will be Mummy and Daddy anyway I assume.

It's hard enough to find names that you love me very mind restricting yourself to one letter.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 29/03/2022 15:13

I’m a twin- we don’t have the same initials thankfully, as it was hard enough trying to have separate identities outside of “the twins” right throughout our childhoods.
