Hi all,

36 weeks now and still deciding on a name for our little girl!

Our current front-runners are Robyn and Cassie, however I just watched a film with a character in it called Tally and think I really like it!

What's everyone's thoughts??

I thought it was a racist slur? That's the context I've heard it in. Is that just in Scotland? There's a famous Scottish play called Tally's Blood.

DoorLion · 13/03/2022 11:52

Robyn with a y is the usual spelling for a girl. Robin for a boy

I don’t think that is necessarily true, I agree you would be unlikely to find a boy Robyn but there have been lots of girl Robins, and I also prefer it without a Y. Robin Wright the actress for example, and girl Robins abounded in the school stories I used to read - I’m not sure Chalet School Robin was really called Robin although I may be wrong, but I definitely had a book called Robin the Rebel and she was definitely a girl!

Anyway, sorry, thread derailment, I just wanted to defend girl Robin-without-a-Y.

Not as an actual name. It means total when adding up a bill 'Tally up' or tally man - when you buy something 'on tick' and pay it off weekly. When I saw the thread title I thought you were asking about the word/if it is still used/which part of the country it is from etc.

As a nickname it is fine.

helpmum2003 · 13/03/2022 12:16

Tallulah?

Talia?

Tsuni · 13/03/2022 12:54

Do you like Talia or Tahlia?

SherbertLemons · 13/03/2022 12:56

I'd think it's a nickname for Thalia

September29th · 13/03/2022 13:01

Cally maybe?

DominickTheItalianXmasDonkey · 13/03/2022 13:02

Tally is offensive slang for Italian.

KirstenBlest · 13/03/2022 13:04

Me too. Robin gives me nature vibes but Robyn gives me middle-aged vibes and I think of the singer.

Similar with Lily which I love and makes me think of flowers. Lilly doesn't do anything for me.

SleeplessWB · 13/03/2022 13:15

I think Cassie is lovely.

Is it really? Have never heard that (in the UK)

TenThousandSpoons · 13/03/2022 13:24

Tally chart/Tally ho!

Robyn is lovely.

AHungryCaterpillar · 13/03/2022 13:25

No

I've been looking since I posted and I think it might just be a racist thing in Scotland. It's the title of a famous Scottish play which is about racism. Definitely offensive.

KirstenBlest · 13/03/2022 13:43

Living tally

WalkingOnSonshine · 13/03/2022 13:48

Love it as a shortening for Talitha.

Also really like Billie and Stevie.

Well you live and learn. Thanks, interesting.

Cedarfire · 13/03/2022 14:04

I think it’s a lovely nickname for Talia or Talitha, both really nice names. Our little jack russel was called Tally, she was a great little dog, so fun and energetic.

MissCarolina · 13/03/2022 14:05

I know a Tallie who's name is Natalia.

RoisinD · 13/03/2022 14:07

@tearinghairout

I also thought of Tally Ho, in fact I knew an unpleasant person who happened to give his hound that name. I like Talia though, which I expect would get shortened.
Have heard of dogs called Tally before
ISmellBurnings · 13/03/2022 14:10

How Callie?

Tally just sounds nicknamey.

singingirl · 13/03/2022 14:13

I know a Tally too, also short for Talitha which is Hebrew in origin. It’s pretty and different.

DrDetriment · 13/03/2022 14:16

Tally is an old word for tax so no.
