What do you think of the name Atticus? The sound, the associations you have, any thoughts really.

Thanks!

I like it.
Everyone said it would become really popular about 6 years ago, but it never did.
I think it’s a name that needs to be carried off though. Bit of a risk.

Snowbell99 · 11/03/2022 22:26

It's too harsh and a bit pretentious. No good nicknames, unless you like Attie.

Makes me think of lawyer and "To Kill a Mockingbird".

I can't really imagine an Atticus under the age of 30.

It is fine but so harsh and no way to soften it nicely or find a nickname for a younger kid.

Snowbell99 · 11/03/2022 22:27

It also makes me think of "attic".

I also heard it everywhere a few years ago (not actually being used, only a few times, but many many times on websites). I also thought it would rise quickly but it never really did.

bugbag · 11/03/2022 22:27

I love it. It's on my list

Jinglebellsoncake · 11/03/2022 22:28

I think it sounds quite pretentious Smile

I don't hate it. But don't like it either

follygirl · 11/03/2022 22:29

It reminds me of Atticus Finch in 'to kill a mockingbird'. My fave book ever. It's a very 'grown up' name though, can't imagine a little boy with that name.

cafedesreves · 11/03/2022 22:29

There's one at nursery. It's a bit pretentious!

EcoCustard · 11/03/2022 22:30

I love it and it was on our list of 5 front runners for DC1. No association and only recognised from To kill a Mockingbird which stayed with me after reading it years ago. He just didn’t suit Atticus when born.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/03/2022 22:31

I like it
Attaboy for fun
It’s got a nice history

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 11/03/2022 22:34

It's the latest middle class name of choice, like Theodore and Miles before it. I've heard of several lately. There'll be one in every primary school class in a few years time.

bonkersbirdie · 11/03/2022 22:40

There's a character in greys anatomy whose name is atticus but he goes by link (surname). He's a nice guy in the show so the name has positive connections for me.

blockbustervideo · 11/03/2022 22:42

No.

MartinMartinMarti · 11/03/2022 22:48

Try-hard.

Smoothyloopy · 11/03/2022 22:56

Can only think of Attics Hoy, Bad Education 😀

Theaspidistraiswilting · 11/03/2022 22:56

I love it!

TenThousandSpoons · 11/03/2022 23:03

I really like it.
To Kill A Mockingbird is my association.
Everyone said it would become popular 10 years ago but it hasn’t. I don’t know any.

PortalooSunset · 11/03/2022 23:08

It isn't for me but a friend's dc has this name and it really suits them.

KirstenBlest · 11/03/2022 23:18

Mum has read a book for GCSE English

TheUsualShitshow · 11/03/2022 23:19

It's very 'oh aren't we ever so literary' but in reality, everyone reads TKAMB at school so it's a rubbish brag.

YvanEhtNiojYvanEhtNioj · 13/03/2022 10:31

Why not Loftus?

Suprima · 13/03/2022 10:34

@KirstenBlest

Mum has read a book for GCSE English
Absolutely this

I similarly cringe when people give their children tragic Shakespeare names like ‘Ophelia’- having heard it once, thinking it sounds naice and MC and not really clicking that it’s a horrible, horrible namesake and you just wouldn’t use it.

FlamingoDust · 14/03/2022 18:18

Love it! There is one on an Australian kids programme from a while ago called 'little lunch' and it always makes me smile when I hear it

MadameDragon · 14/03/2022 18:24

Overly literary, but not enough to have read Go Set a Watchman.

toastofthetown · 14/03/2022 18:25

It's a bit of an eye roller for me. Like 'I read a book once for my GSCEs aren't I so cultured and unracist'. Also I believe that Atticus Finch in the sequel turns out to be pretty racist anyway, so maybe not the best namesake (and there's no getting around the association).

Pieceofpurplesky · 14/03/2022 18:28

As PP have said - in the first book Harper Lee wrote (but published a long time after TKAM) Atticus is racist. So screams Of try hard literary family who don't really read ...
