Lexi... yay or nay?

My dh wants to called our baby Lexi-May but I don't like it. Lexi feels a bit overused and slightly chavy to me, and May has been done to death. So many kids at other dd school called "something-May. "
He doesn't seem open to many alternatives. Sigh

No, as a nickname yes but not as a childs full name.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 09/03/2022 11:20

No, just no. Anything hyphenated with a May or Mae is as, my late mother would say, as common as muck !

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 11:25

@Spaghag

I've met a few Lexi-May/Mae. It seems almost obligatory to have a sister named first name-Rose.

It's wouldn't be my choice TBH.

This.

They are usually Lily-Rose and Ellie-May

I find Lexi a bit clumsy to say, and In don't like hyphenated names

TrashyPanda · 09/03/2022 11:28

Really don’t like Lexi at all.
May is a short form of Mary.
I’d go for Alexandra Mary

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/03/2022 11:29

No.

WilsonMilson · 09/03/2022 11:34

Awful, common as muck.

Hikoridikori · 09/03/2022 12:47

No... sorry

Viviennemary · 09/03/2022 12:50

It's dire.

oneumbrella · 09/03/2022 13:38

I would assume the parents of a child called this would be very young.
Lexi is a perfectly acceptable shortening of Alexandra/Alexia which would boost the syllable count and negate the need for the tag along -May.

hazandduck · 09/03/2022 13:43

I don’t like it. And more importantly you don’t like it! Has your DH said what he likes so much about this name? Does it have personal meaning/family connection or something?

Squeakerfoot · 09/03/2022 13:44

I like Lexie as a nickname for Alexandra or Alexis, but without the May.

JazzyBBG · 09/03/2022 15:51

Maybe show your other half this thread!

Best version I can think is Alexia. Alexandra is great but can't see it shortened to Lexi personally - of course you could always sell it to him this way ;)

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 15:53

Alexia is a condition, and means means the inability to comprehend written material. @JazzyBBG

GlitteryGreen · 09/03/2022 15:57

I like Lexi - my friend called her baby this recently - but not Lexi-May. I agree that -May is used excessively currently.

JazzyBBG · 09/03/2022 15:58

@FayCarew 🤣🤣 I know two called this!

MiniMoouse · 09/03/2022 16:21

I like Lexi as a nickname for Alexandra or Alexia but I really don’t like hyphenated names.

ComeUnderMySexBlanket · 09/03/2022 17:56

@AnxiousHeffalump

No to Lexi or any spelling of it.

No to anything -May, or even worse, -Mai.

Or even worse: Mae.

Lexi is, as PP have said, a stripper name.

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 19:17

@JazzyBBG, do either have a sister called Amelia?

JazzyBBG · 09/03/2022 19:29

@FayCarew err no

Zillamop · 09/03/2022 20:52

Xanthe has the X and is a nicer name.

Chichimcgee · 09/03/2022 20:58

There’s a lexi in my sons school. Very shy, quite chubby and introverted. She gets tormented by ‘sexy lexi’ comments unfortunately.

HaggisBurger · 09/03/2022 21:02

I actually really like Lexi. But double barrelled first names always sound “chavvy” to me (given you used that phrase).

nildesparandum · 09/03/2022 21:11

Well I am old now, but when I was a child I had a great aunt whose close friend was called Lexi, known to us as Auntie Lexi.She was disliked intently by the family, I never knew why, too young at the time to be told why.I remember her telling me with immense pride, that her real name was Alexandra, after Queen Alexandra you know.
The name Lexi always reminds me of her.

RobinBlackbird · 09/03/2022 21:25

I was going to say call his bluff by insisting on the traditional version which would be Alexandra Mary.
Then when he refuses offer him your favourite as the solution!

SeanChailleach · 09/03/2022 21:55

Lexi-May always makes me think of Laxmi, or Laksmita, a goddess. The Lexie-May i know is totally awesome.
I do love May. So pretty and sweet smelling blossom.
If he likes it and you just think it's overdone, how about Alessia Maeve?
