Volodymyr

Anyone looking for a cool name for their baby boy could not do much better, in my opinion, than Volodymyr.

It means bright and famous ( as does Robert, but it's not the same name).

It can be shortened to Volodyk, Volodia and Vlodko, but I like the idea of Volo.

Or, if you taste is less traditional, maybe Zelensky (or, as they spell it in the Guardian, Zelenskiy).

Stand with Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine.

Personally I’d find it bonkers if British parents with no links to Ukraine (other than changing their Facebook picture to include a Ukrainian flag for a couple of weeks) called their baby Volodymyr.

DoorLion · 08/03/2022 11:59

It is pretty similar to the name Vladimir, though, isn't it.

bluepeacock · 08/03/2022 12:00

Isn't he the baddie in Harry Potter?

I'd rather just make a donation to the Ukrainian embassy PayPal fund (which i already have done!)

I suggest you do the same OP and don't inflict that awful name on any future ds's!

GlitteryGreen · 08/03/2022 12:01

Isn't he the baddie in Harry Potter? LOL

cornflakedreams · 08/03/2022 12:02

Volodymyr Smith?

It’s from the same root, isn’t it? Too many longer term associations for me!
Firesidefox · 08/03/2022 12:12

Thank you OP for making me laugh out loud

Fine if you're Slavic, but otherwise I don't think using your child's name as an opportunity to virtue signal is a good idea.

FridaRose · 09/03/2022 13:01

Why don't you start with yourself OP. Change your name to Volodina. Deep poll is that way ➡️

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/03/2022 13:02

If you’re Ukrainian, great.

Bit odd if you’re not.

BikiniB0tt0m · 09/03/2022 13:03

Good grief 🙄

TinaYouFatLard · 09/03/2022 13:05

I don’t think waiting for a baby boy to be born is good enough TBH. I think if you truly stand with Ukraine you should change your own name and everyone in family’s name to Volodymyr.

We did this (including the dog) Confuses the postman but i think it’s just the price you pay

@cornflakedreams

Volodymyr Smith?
Brother of Napoleon Bon-Accord Smith and cousin to Elvis MacDonald.
FayCarew · 09/03/2022 14:18

Володимир Олександрович Зеленський is my preferred spelling

Ellmau · 09/03/2022 18:17

I suspect they're the same name, just Ukrainian and Russian spellings.

Perhaps more suitable as a middle name.

It's the same name

Just like Aleksandr, Oleksander and Alexander are the same name

HailAdrian · 09/03/2022 18:53

I didn't notice it was the same name. Vlod vs Vlad.

NatMoz · 09/03/2022 19:21

I'm Ukrainian and it's a terrible name. Definitely wasn't on our baby boy list. We had a girl in the end anywayGrin

CatsArePeople · 14/03/2022 12:30

please. don't.

Agree. Why do things by halves.
HorseInTheHouse · 14/03/2022 13:00

If the Puritans could name their children entire phrases with hyphens, why can't we?

Glory-To-Ukraine Smith would be a fine name, and equally stirring for either a boy or a girl.

TatianaBis · 14/03/2022 14:34

Call him Volvo for short.

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/03/2022 14:39

The name Boris means brave. Doesn't mean I'd use it. Plus I had thought it meant "bone-idle wanker" until recently.
