Thoughts on Jo as a middle name?

Mads199 · 07/03/2022 09:06

We are about to have our daughter any time now, and her name is going to be Daisy.

We love her first name, but we’re still deliberating over whether we love her middle name - we have chosen Jo because we feel it kind of balances out the more feminine ‘Daisy’ quite well, and also because we’re both big literature buffs and her name is inspired by the characters Daisy from Daisy Miller and Jo from little women, but what are your opinions on the name Daisy Jo? My worry is that it possibly sounds a bit like a deep southern cowgirl… but I also kind of love it.

Our last name is two syllables btw, sorry can’t give much more info than that! Any opinions are welcome!

I don’t necessarily dislike the name but was reading it in my head with the southern cow girl accent. I think she’ll get a lot of that I’m afraid.

FayCarew · 07/03/2022 14:35

Daisy Josephine is nicer but it's ok

Synchrony · 07/03/2022 14:43

I did think cowgirl. Wasn't Jo's full name Josephine?

Nelliephant1 · 07/03/2022 14:48

Wouldn't touch Josephine with a barge pole but I've known three and they all hated the name. They shortened it to jo or josie.

I quite like Daisy Jo but I do see your point with the Southern thing. That's not necessarily a bad thing maybe?

Fivebeanchilli · 07/03/2022 15:15

I don't like one syllable mn's personally. I'd go for Daisy Josephine which is gorgeous.

Mads199 · 07/03/2022 15:34

Thanks all for your comments so far! We do really like Josephine as well but the thing is our surname has an s in it too - so once put together I don’t know if the name sounds a bit… hissy? If that makes sense!!

40 weeks pregnant and only just deciding to revisit this now whoops! I just cannot decide

If anyone has any other middle name suggestions for Daisy I’m all ears! Something quite short and less ‘feminine’ sounding would be perfect

Daisy Jane
Daisy Kay
Daisy Bo

I think you’re overthinking it a bit when it comes to the “flow” etc with your surname.

The occasions when you’d have cause to tell anyone your dc’s full name are slim- I don’t even think I’ve had to tell the school when I was enrolling them. Just passports and bank account forms.

Sometimes I have to sit and think for a second about what DC2’s middle name is because it’s so rarely used.

Just go with what you like, as long as it doesn’t spell out a rude/funny word it’s fine!

MissCarolina · 07/03/2022 16:12

I like Daisy Jo.

Other short middle name ideas:
Daisy Faye
Daisy Jay
Daisy Paige

ReginaFilange001 · 07/03/2022 21:17

I like it. It has lovely meaning for you and she will never be Daisy Jo, just Daisy.

Not keen on Josephine and I don't think Jo March was either!

Other ideas

Daisy Elizabeth (Bennett)
Daisy Jane ( Austen)
Daisy Louisa (Alcott)
Daisy Isabel ( Portrait of a Lady)
Daisy Catherine (Wuthering Heights)
Daisy Jean/Scout ( to kill a mockingbird)

My DD has Jo as a middle name and I love it for exactly the reasons you’ve mentioned. We actually chose it for family connections but I love its fresh tomboy feel, especially when paired with a very girly name like Daisy.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/03/2022 21:28

Daisy Jo does sound like the child of two D listers or similar being announced on the front cover of Hello - its cute but it’s slightly in Fifi Trixiebelle territory. or a cowgirl as you say.

Daisy is sweet but very girly, so a more grown up middle name might be good so she has options - Daisy Josephine, Daisy Joanna, Daisy Jean, Daisy Jane, Daisy Jocelyn, Daisy Jocasta..

I think Jo March was Josephine, it was definitely short for something.

WaitinginVain · 07/03/2022 21:51

Neither are names that I would personally choose but I think they go well together.

I certainly wouldn't be using Josephine, Joanna etc if the name I liked and wanted was Jo - I'd stick with Daisy Jo.

DogsAndGin · 07/03/2022 21:59

Daisy Jo sounds like sounds a bit ‘trailer trash’ to me. Sorry OP!

Billandben444 · 07/03/2022 22:05

I wouldn't stress over a middle name unless you're likely to be calling her Daisy-Jo in conversation - I don't think anyone outside immediate family will even remember what it is. Personally, I think Daisy is a cow's name but then I grew up on a farm!

shinyboots · 07/03/2022 22:28

Daisy Elizabeth (as suggested by a pp) is lovely.

OnSilverStars · 07/03/2022 22:31

Agreed with pp. sounds like trailer trash

My DD is Daisy Hope.

Kite22 · 07/03/2022 23:51

Daisy Jo does sound like something off The Dukes of Hazzard.

I think Jo is a lovely shortening of a name too, not a stand alone name.

DramaAlpaca · 08/03/2022 00:25

Daisy Jo comes across to me as very twee. Daisy is cutesy enough on its own without having a diminutive as a middle name.

Btw, those of you who used the revolting expression 'trailer trash' should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

Bromse · 08/03/2022 02:28

Josephine or Joanna (not Joanne), sound find with Daisy but Jo is a diminutive, not a name in its own right. Jo March was Josephine.

Hydrate · 08/03/2022 02:52

I came to say the same thing, Jo was Josephine. Marguerite Josephine, Daisy Jo for short.
RobertSmithsLipstick · 08/03/2022 03:00

I love it.
