Phoebe or Cosima

My husband and I had complete agreement for our first daughter, we picked her name before she was conceived and didn’t change the entire way through.

This time…it’s a bit different. I like Cosima, for sentimental reasons and a link with my first daughter’s name. My husband prefers Phoebe. We’ve narrowed it down to those two.

They both have their drawbacks (one people don’t always know how to pronounce, the other people don’t always know how to spell). But they’re both beautiful.

If you had to pick one of them, which would it be?

(P.S. I also like Zelda, but first daughter has a Z name. Would that be a bit much?)

Thanks all!

Cosima

Dreamingof3 · 07/03/2022 10:19

Cosima 😍

I've known a couple of phoebe's and it's been pronounced more fay-bay due to accents and its put me right off 😅

toastofthetown · 07/03/2022 10:48

I prefer Cosima. Phoebe feels dull and insipid. I’d avoid having matching initials if there are other names you like.

PeakyBlender · 07/03/2022 13:47

I dislike Phoebe and didn't know why until I've read a pp say it reminds them of feeble and I think that's it

Cosima is nice, I don't think you'll Jane issues with pronunciations as I can't think of another way to say it.

Cassia is pretty too or Cassiopeia if you're feeling that you want a more out there name

TooTiredToCoo · 07/03/2022 15:05

I like Cosima.

I'm really intrigued what your other daughters super rare "Z" name is.

Donson · 07/03/2022 16:47

Cosima makes me think of ‘cosseted’.
Phoebe is a great name.

TheVanguardSix · 07/03/2022 16:50

What’s your Z name?
I prefer Phoebe but I wonder how your DD’s Z name sounds.

TeddyPlaygroup90 · 07/03/2022 16:55

@TooTiredToCoo

I like Cosima.

I'm really intrigued what your other daughters super rare "Z" name is.

It’s not a super rare name overall, just super rare in Ireland!

It’s Zia. Loads of them all over the world because it’s an Arabic and Jewish name, just not many in my country. Also, because it’s like a cross between Zoë and Mia it’s quite normal sounding. I’ve seen it suggested a few times on here.

Sorry, I've not come across Cosima before, how is it pronounced?

Co-See-Ma?
Coz-ee-ma?

drumandthebass · 07/03/2022 17:06

Both awful

ReiltinDubh · 07/03/2022 17:07

I love Cosima. And obviously also Réiltín Grin
I don't think not being a fluent Irish speaker would be a barrier to using it, most people I know in the past 10-15 years who have chosen really Irish names wouldn't be fluent speakers.

TeddyPlaygroup90 · 07/03/2022 17:10

Thanks for all the feedback! I thought Phoebe would win by a landslide, interesting to see it’s more mixed.

Cosima by a country mile.

StrawberrySanta · 07/03/2022 17:29

How do you pronounce Cosima? I have never heard of it. Cozzy-ma?
Phoebe is too Friends for me. I prefer Zelda!

Purplestars22 · 07/03/2022 18:13

Phoebe, love it!

SouthParkCovid · 07/03/2022 18:14

Not a fan of Phoebe, overused and awful sounding.

Cosima sounds lovely.

elfran · 07/03/2022 20:16

I was 100% team Cosima until you said your first daughter's name is Zia. I just don't think they work together, sorry OP! It almost sounds like Zia is a shortened form of Cosima, iykwim.

However, not sure what nn you're thinking of but Zia and Coco or Zia and Mimi work really well! As does Zia and Phoebe.

WTF475878237NC · 07/03/2022 20:21

Cosima is too close to Cozima (Zia could be a nickname). Phoebe by default!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 07/03/2022 20:21

I love Cosima but I really don't think it works with Cosima for siblings. Sorry.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 07/03/2022 20:34

Phoebe by far.
I know a Phoebe and never ever associated it with feeble....she is a force to be reckoned with if anything.

TeddyPlaygroup90 · 07/03/2022 20:36

They sound a little more different with an Irish accent, it’s a soft s in the middle, but I do take the point you’re making. Lots to consider.

Maybe I need to go back to the drawing board completely.

itsnotdeep · 07/03/2022 20:37

Isn't Cosima Nigella Lawson's daughter?

I think it's a nice name actually, but prefer Phoebe. I only know Phoebe's who are forces to be reckoned with.

DogsAndGin · 07/03/2022 20:52

I love them both OP! What a brilliant position to be in - you can go wrong either way. I don’t like Zelda though Star

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 07/03/2022 20:57

Both nice but I prefer Cosima as it’s less popular.

Cute for a child but so elegant for an older woman.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/03/2022 21:06

I like Cosima - she’ll have an adventurous life. I don’t think it’s fussy. And I think the pronunciation is quite intuitive.

Phoebe is OK, but only ok. Pheeeebs is not great.

Two Zs is a bit of a statement, I quite like Zelda, makes me think of the roaring 20s, but I think Cosima will be more universally liked.
