Please help me! Does this first name sound silly with our surname?

I'm due to have a son in a few months and I always thought I'd name a boy William after my beloved but long passed Grandather. Luckily my husband loves the name too, and it happens to work nicely with our daughters name as well I think.

But our surname is Wcks (like Joe Wicks the Body Coach). My husband thinks the alliteration of William W*cks sounds fine - more memorable in fact, since William itself is a pretty common name. He points out William Wilberforce, William Windsor etc.

Also what about "Will" W*cks? Most teenage William's I've met seem to go by Will as a shortening but I'm worried that might sound even sillier if he chooses to do that since they are both one syllable names to boot.

My husband says I'm over thinking it and we should just stick with our favourite name and that it doesn't sound odd and there won't be any teasing since William is such a popular name - I had suddenly panicked about "Willy Wcks" or even worse "Willy Dcks"! (although my husband was never teased about our surname.)

We do have other potential names on our list (Thomas, Alexander, Samuel, James) but I still love William the most as it has such meaning for me...

So I'm sorry about such a long first post, but would be really grateful for any advice.

Sounds fine to me.

ShippingNews · 06/03/2022 02:58

I'd go with one of the others, with William as the middle name. Setting your son up to be teased is not a good thing .

If kids are going to tease they can find 101 other ways to tease. Our son hasn't been teased!

No, it wouldn't be a good thing, but this particular name combination really doesn't seem to have teasing potential to me.

I think it's fine, OP!

CakesOfVersailles · 06/03/2022 03:23

I think it's a lovely name. It doesn't sound silly to me. It has a lot of meaning to you and both you and your husband like it. Go for it!

SaladandGravy · 06/03/2022 03:26

Why have you typed Wicks as W*cks? Wicks isn't swearing, rude, offensive etc. Maybe this explains why you feel uneasy about his name?

scrivette · 06/03/2022 03:28

It sounds fine, go for it.

I assume she doesn't want her query about her son's name to be googlable?
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/03/2022 03:41

I think Will(iam) W*cks is a nice name. Warm vibes.

OutlookStalking · 06/03/2022 03:45

I dont like Willy wicks myself and will wicks doesn't naturally roll of my tongue. But there's nothing "wrong" with it.

@SaladandGravy

Because she doesn’t want people who know her to pick up on this thread -

It’s absolutely fine OP, can’t see any way it would lead to reading, and I agree with your husband thr alliteration is memorable in a good way

I agree. alliterative W names havn’t fine Williams Wordsworth, Wilberforce or Windsor any harm. It’s a nice lyrical combination.

Sounds fine to me

lookforthesun · 06/03/2022 06:51

Sounds fine

FrangipaniBlue · 06/03/2022 06:57

I love it, it sounds very "important" to me if that makes sense?

If I met a child called William W*cks I'd think "there's a child who will go on to do great things"

I know that is totally illogical though!!!!

PortalooSunset · 06/03/2022 06:59

Sounds fine to me. Majority of teen ds's friends seem to call each other by surname anyway (with 'y' added to single syllable ones, so Clarky, Jonesy, Wicksy etc).

MimiDaisy11 · 06/03/2022 07:06

It’s fine. I think it’s good to think of jokes or bullying potential but I think people on these threads often go so far. In my personal experience kids are never bullied for their name alone. There were kids in my class with different sounding names but the two children who were bullied the most had such plain normal names.

Beautiful3 · 06/03/2022 07:31

My bil is a William, and his mates all call him willy. He likes the nickname, even got the kids to call him, uncle willy! Makes me cringe though!

Laptopsandmouses · 06/03/2022 07:40

I’m also curious why you won’t write wicks?

DaisyTheUnicorn · 06/03/2022 07:55

Yes I wouldn't like hearing "Willy" either tbh!!

user1471604848 · 06/03/2022 08:05

All the names on your list are lovely.
But if you like William best, go for that. I think it sounds fine with your surname.

Fivebeanchilli · 06/03/2022 08:21

My 17 year old knows a hundred Williams (slight exaggeration but not much!) and none of them get "Willy".
I think it sounds fine with the surname.

GiantSpider · 06/03/2022 08:24

Personally I would have it as a middle name instead.

Loopytiles · 06/03/2022 08:25

Is your worry about potential teasing to do with william/wick being ‘double willy’?

Seems a stretch.
