Please help me! Does this first name sound silly with our surname?

I'm due to have a son in a few months and I always thought I'd name a boy William after my beloved but long passed Grandather. Luckily my husband loves the name too, and it happens to work nicely with our daughters name as well I think.

But our surname is Wcks (like Joe Wicks the Body Coach). My husband thinks the alliteration of William W*cks sounds fine - more memorable in fact, since William itself is a pretty common name. He points out William Wilberforce, William Windsor etc.

Also what about "Will" W*cks? Most teenage William's I've met seem to go by Will as a shortening but I'm worried that might sound even sillier if he chooses to do that since they are both one syllable names to boot.

My husband says I'm over thinking it and we should just stick with our favourite name and that it doesn't sound odd and there won't be any teasing since William is such a popular name - I had suddenly panicked about "Willy Wcks" or even worse "Willy Dcks"! (although my husband was never teased about our surname.)

We do have other potential names on our list (Thomas, Alexander, Samuel, James) but I still love William the most as it has such meaning for me...

So I'm sorry about such a long first post, but would be really grateful for any advice.

William Wi**s is a lovely name! You're overthinking I think it sounds good and I also love the name William. Sounds like you do too so just relax now about the name

Gardeningcreature · 06/03/2022 08:37

Are you worried about the potential for Willy Wicks?
Not good I'm afraid and you absolutely cannot stop people calling him Willy Wicks.

SaladandGravy · 06/03/2022 08:39

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches ah, I hadn't thought about that, thank you.

AddictedToOlives · 06/03/2022 08:43

Name is great
You’re overthinking/worrying about nothing

SaladandGravy · 06/03/2022 08:44

@Luredbyapomegranate I should have realised this before posting my sons full name to show it was a loved, and used, name.

I'm a right idiot aren't I? I FEEL SO STUPID

SaladandGravy · 06/03/2022 08:47

@Laptopsandmouses

I’m also curious why you won’t write wicks?
I'm relieved it wasn't only me confused about this.
Fleur405 · 06/03/2022 08:52

I think William is a lovely name and it’s absolutely fine with your surname!

Wonderingaboutthename · 06/03/2022 10:33

Sorry for the confusion - as a previous poster suggested I wrote W*cks only in the hope the thread would be less searchable.

But thinking about it more (shouldn't post in the early hours when tired!), it's a reasonably commonplace surname - or variations of it are @saladandgravy, really good to hear of a William Wick, thank you - so it likely doesn't matter.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to post your advice and views - and it's really good to see many people like William and think William Wicks sounds fine or even great. I think it's decided now then, as I do love the traditional feel of William - our second choice of Xander, Alexa

Alexander Wicks with nickname Xander is lovely.

Wonderingaboutthename · 06/03/2022 10:37

Sorry posted too soon - Alexander on the Birth Certificate feels a bit more trendy/contemporary in comparison we think.
Thank you again everyone for all your help.

I like it ! I agree with pps that it flows well. William is a lovely name. You could also use Bill/ Billy.

Prettynails · 06/03/2022 10:38

Thomas wicks could become Tom dicks

But why?

William wicks is great

CushionSpiral · 06/03/2022 10:40

I think it sounds fine, go for it as you’re both happy! You’ll regret it if you don’t

Sheeeeeysh · 06/03/2022 10:43

Wick is slang for penis so I wouldn't go with Willy Wicks.

I just don't think it flows well either

AHungryCaterpillar · 06/03/2022 11:07

No I don’t like it personally I wouldn’t use it

intheblightgarden · 06/03/2022 11:57

Willy wicks is a bit much for me but I guess it has a ring

Firebird83 · 06/03/2022 13:02

We had a William Witt at school who was teased for his name.

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 17:31

Willy and Wick could mean teasing

Lurking9to5 · 09/03/2022 17:33

Is wick not slang for dick too? Willie Wicks sounds ridiculous.
I can't believe people are saying "sounds fine'

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 19:24

Neither can I. Both are ok but not together

resm · 09/03/2022 20:48

I think it’s a really strong name, I like the alliteration of it. I think Thomas & James don’t have the same ring to it as the S at the end jars a bit for me.

FrogFairy · 09/03/2022 21:01

I had an uncle William but he was always known as Billy.

HeardleFan · 09/03/2022 21:10

Even if there's only a small chance of teasing, I'd avoid.
Willy Wicks
Willy Wanks
etc

Random789 · 09/03/2022 21:34

The fact that w*icks and willy are both penis words would put me off I'm afraid.

As for the alliteration, i think that in 'William Wicks" it is quite nice, rolls off the tongue. But in "Will Wicks" it is clunky.

demoness · 10/03/2022 11:34

I wouldn't do it... To me it doesn't flow well, and it could easily be changed to something teasible e.g. Willie Licks.
