Croía, Indie, Ted and Tadgh (that spelling) storming up the charts, looks like.

Ooh, interesting.

Could you give the nearest approximate pronunciation for the gaeilge names please?

daisyducky · 25/02/2022 19:48

I love Irish names and some I've never heard of before. Could you tell me how paidi is pronounced?

Joolsin · 25/02/2022 20:07

Páidí is pronounced Paw-Dee or Paw-Jee, depending on the region.

Croía I would pronounce Cree-ah, but I'm open to correction on that!!

Tadhg is the correct spelling, but there are variations, it's pronounced like the first syllable of tiger, with a slight elongation of the vowel sound.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 20:35

I got those right I think but the top 100 ones have many I'd almost certainly get wrong.

Rian, Oadhran, Daithí, Páidí, Fionn, Donnacha, Senan, Eoin (Owen not Ewan), Darragh

Laoise, Áine, Ailbhe, Méabh, Éabha, Caoimhe, Saoirse

babynamelover · 25/02/2022 20:36

Thanks for sharing. I loved Orla but hubby didn't sadly.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 20:42

Sadhbh, Aoibhín,

added these because I think they might not be Rosheen, Neev and Awla:
Róisín, Niamh, Orla

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 20:42

I like Páidí

ChuckBerrysBoots · 25/02/2022 20:44

Niamh is Nee-uv for me (Cork, if that makes a difference)

Liv999 · 25/02/2022 22:20

Surprised to see Ted in there, dont know any little Teds or Teddys either, I only know one little Fiadh too

Lucysskydiamonds · 25/02/2022 22:47

We called our dog Ted last year, don't think he's counted in the figures though Wink

Love Páidí. Reminds me of an adonis of Irish college...

LizzieAnt · 25/02/2022 23:25

Tadgh spelt like this (instead of Tadhg) makes me a bit sad actually. Isn't it just a spelling mistake?

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 23:36

No idea but shouldn't it be pronounced Tad? I'm not irish

Joolsin · 25/02/2022 23:38

No, as I posted previously, it's pronounced like tiger without the r, with a slight elongation of the i sound.
Joolsin · 25/02/2022 23:41

@KirstenBlest

Sadhbh, Aoibhín,

added these because I think they might not be Rosheen, Neev and Awla:
Róisín, Niamh, Orla

Sadhbh is sive (rhymes with five) Aoibhín is Eev-een or Ay-veen

Orla is not Awla. The R is very much pronounced in Irish names so it's Or-la.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 23:43

But that is how Tadhg is said. Wouldn't Tadgh be sort of Tad with a mutated ch on the end?

Joolsin · 25/02/2022 23:47

Oh, I get you. No, Tadgh is a misspelling of Tadhg. Anyone who spells it the wrong way still pronounces it the same!! I've seen it spelled Tadg also
WordleDordle · 25/02/2022 23:47

I would pronounce it Thigh-og

WordleDordle · 25/02/2022 23:48

or Thigh-g

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 23:48

@Joolsin, it's popular in mainland UK and they say it as Orla but non-rhotic so it sounds like Awla. I raised the pronunciation earlier as I find the using a name but with an anglicised pronunciation a bit weird.

I still struggle to not think of Orla Kiely as Awla Kylie because that was how I first heard it

Orla without the r sounds a bit funny all right. Kiely and Kylie are the same for me though.

Grin yes, I do shout at the tv when I hear it said that way!!!

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 23:58

When I first saw Tadhg I thought it was Teague or Tigh. so I appreciate being told how to say them. If I saw Tadg I probably think it was short for Tadgell or something

Thank you! I love Paidi!

I've been told that in Belfast the spelling Tadhg gets pronounced "Tad" there. Can anyone confirm, and does anyone know how the Tadgh spelling is being pronounced?

Interesting that if you look at the ‘most popular name by county’, lots of the girls names are Irish (admittedly, overwhelmingly Fiadh), but in the case of boys names, I think only one county has an Irish top name.
