Well you seem to like the classics. This might be a bit hit and miss but:

Henry

William
Edward
Edmund
Russell
George
Alexander
Charles
Theodore
Matthew
Samuel
Frederick

Jonathan

Apart Richard (which is classic but not timeless) those are timeless boys names in England and Wales (haven't left the top 100 since about 1900) so you might also like the 9 other boys ones:

Alexander
William
Edward
Daniel
Charles
George
Michael
Joseph
Thomas

Other names that have come close to being "timeless" and staying in the top 100:
Henry
Samuel
John
Robert

And some very classic names with a similar vibe to Richard imo:
Hugh
Frederick
Peter
Phillip
Stephen

Matthew, Simon, Peter?

timestheyarechanging · 24/02/2022 05:18

Please don't go for David. I'm 50 and had four in my class at primary school
Also Matthew, very 70s although my 17 yr old sons best friend is called Matthew?! My friends fro Bav in thdfay refer to themselves as Dave and Matt - would you be happy with that?

timestheyarechanging · 24/02/2022 05:19

James definitely

angelsandinsects · 24/02/2022 06:06

Whilst a PP might have had four Davids in her class, you just don't get children with those sorts of names at the moment. Now, if you go for a name like that, you could be unlucky and find out it is about to become super popular again but I think you've got a good couple of days before David & similar become "grandad names" and popular again.
DS has a classic 70s name, is the only one in the school with it (if you discount staff members and about 40% of the dads at pick up!) but everyone knows how to spell it. It does mean you can't get off the shelf personalised stuff but that's never been much of an issue for us.
Other similar names in terms of era whilst being equally solid:
Andrew
Christopher
Adam
Luke
Daniel
Matthew (although I know a handful under 10)
Simon
Jonathon
Nicholas
Peter
Mark
Michael

Of the names you've suggested, James continues to be used in a one in every class/cub pack etc type way although not as popular as Thomas or Oliver or currently fashionable names like Arthur, Oscar, Zak, Noah etc.

I disagree that 'you just don't get children with those sorts of names at the moment'. I work in a school and we still have a fairly steady stream of all the names on that list with the exception of Christopher, Simon, Jonathon and Mark. We have at least one of the rest spread throughout the school, and in some cases, there are several either in the same year group or even the same class. Most of them are 'classics' because they are not really influences by fashion like a lot of what I would term the grandad names..

Thanks everyone. Of your suggestions I really like Edmund and Edward. Quite like John but unsure of it for first name. What do you think of Philip? I like traditional names. Not into Stanley, Sidney or Arthur types.

Really don't like Steven Simon or Jared. Tbh the front runner is James but not 100% on it.

Jamie instead of James?

Edward was also on our list. Similar names we considered (although some already used by family members)
Matthew
Samuel
Daniel

Fivebeanchilli · 24/02/2022 08:18

Jonathan is my favourite of the traditional classics. Jon or Jonty are cute nn's.
Otherwise:
Timothy
Thomas
Ian
Mark
Stephen
Derek
Paul

Philip is perfect as is Michael

StopForAMinute · 24/02/2022 16:40

I quite like Philip. James is lovely too.

Tifalockhart · 24/02/2022 16:45

I like James and Edward, I think they are classic without being associated with a certain generation. I think some of these names are too dated. I say this as someone whose name is associated with an older generation that my own (so I am 30’s but most people with this name are in their 50’s) I really dislike it for this reason, makes me feel old! My DH has a similar ‘dates for his generation name’ and feels the same.

Tifalockhart · 24/02/2022 16:45

*dated for his generation

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2022 18:22

Peter
John

And Micheal and Philip as PPs say
