My baby boy is due in the summer I’d love to know people opinions on the name Solomon. I love it, but I’m worried it’s seen as stuffy/an old man’s name… What, if anything, do you associate with the name? Also love the nn’s- Sol is so cute!

I really love it.

Ilovedthe70s · 19/02/2022 22:48

Like it but I just think of Solomon Grundy,

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
That was the end,
Of Solomon Grundy

Soloman = Sol

Sol = Sun

Your sun, your moon and all of your stars.

It's lovely, go for it.

givemeallthecheese · 19/02/2022 23:07

Sorry *Solomon.

nutellingyou · 19/02/2022 23:49

Always loved it. Solly is fun for a nickname when he's little.

I also like Gideon (nn Giddy) and Micah and Malachi.

Rosieposie101 · 20/02/2022 01:07

I love it, but would definitely assume you were a fellow Christian

Bugger it!
Yes I like it.
Was trying to think of the Solomon Grundy poem but it went wrong..

Rainbowqueeen · 20/02/2022 01:17

Love it. I do know one who is in his teens so it’s never seemed like an old man name to me.

Old man names to me are Bertie, Wilfred and Alfie and they are all relatively popular

Classica · 20/02/2022 02:33

I remember that Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme

Whew! That was quite the week for old Sol.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 20/02/2022 08:46

I love it. I know several Solomons, both young and old. Sol and Solly are great nicknames.

Chasingthewind11 · 20/02/2022 09:35

I've never heard the Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme! Good to know it's out there, maybe it's not taught to children so much these days!

@Rosieposie101 I am a fellow Christian Smile

@nutellingyou we also considered Gideon and Micah for a while. I didn't want it shortened to Mike though, still quite like Gideon!

I really love a lot of biblical boys names.
As much as I do like Solomon, lovely name and I know a couple (not old men, although both have a Jewish back ground not Christian), Gideon is a fabulous name. I would go with Gideon. I do really like Micah too, but Gideon for me is a bit special. I wish I was having more kids so I could use it!

RuthW · 20/02/2022 09:57

Love it

mehok · 20/02/2022 10:00

Saul is nicer

GalesThisMorning · 20/02/2022 10:05

I have a Solomon. Not religious in the slightest. I can't count the number of people who have told me they love his name Smile He goes by Sol in the main

Hummingbirdcake · 20/02/2022 10:06

Quite nice for BC but I prefer Sol or Saul for ‘everyday use’.

PatterPaws · 20/02/2022 10:37

Great name with equally great Sol as a nn.

The Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme spells out what he did over the course of his life. It's not meant to be events of a single week. I take it that he was born on a Monday, was christened on a Tuesday a few months later, was married on a Wednesday in his thirties, took ill on a Thursday as an old man etc. He had a lovely long life!

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
That was the end,
Of Solomon Grundy.

As others have said, it's a name with great associations: wisdom and justice. The world needs more of both.

PatterPaws · 20/02/2022 17:09

🤣

sibbys · 20/02/2022 21:56

I think it's horrible sorry. But I know a terrible and bratty child names Solomon so that's probably why

StScholastica · 20/02/2022 23:09

Love it.

FiftyStoriesHigh · 20/02/2022 23:11

Makes me think of pulling a baby in half.
