Apparently in France the registrars have quite a strict set of criteria for baby names and this list has been published as names rejected by them in 2021...

Fraise
Nutella
Anomalie
Titeuf
Prince-William
Bob l'eponge
Excel
Metallica
Asterix
Spirou
CR7
Lucifer
Clafoutis
Manhattan
Anal
Mini-Cooper
Daisygual
Fleur de Marie
Folavril
MJ

Some of them seem quite innocuous to me after hanging out on this board! No Balonz, sadly Grin. I do wonder about whoever tried to register their child under the French version of 'SpongeBob SquarePants'....

The main surprise for me was that I actually think Anomalie for a girl is quite pretty Blush Thank god this pregnancy is a DS or DH might have been overruling me!

Whilst I don’t like the idea of people policing baby names, i can see why it’s needed. Imagine calling a baby Anal even if you pronounce it Ah-nal. The poor child would be badly bullied at school

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/02/2022 11:26

Any French people or residents can explain whats wrong with Fleur de Marie?

DaisyStPatience · 18/02/2022 11:29

To my unsophisticated English ears these all sound fabulous in French. "Meenee Coopehhrrrrr" even.

SummaLuvin · 18/02/2022 12:06

Historically France had a really limited amount of names that were permitted. That's why there are so many French people with hyphenated first names, it was used as a way to differentiate - rather than another Jean, they become Jean-Baptise, Jean-Pierre, Jean-Franc... I think for that reason too it is considered quite rude to shorten or drop the second part of the name without being invited to do so there, at odds with the British tendencies to shorten names automatically.

PoodleKaboodle · 18/02/2022 12:11

Asterix is a fab name!
I know someone in their 20s called Manhattan.

JustWonderingIfYou · 18/02/2022 12:12

Gosh I feel sorry for these babies. I don't think anyone naming or trying to name a child anal or spongebob should be allowed to reproduce- its cruel.

TimePoliceTeam236 · 18/02/2022 12:12

Not my cup of tea but what’s wrong with Manhattan?

TakeMe2Insanity · 18/02/2022 22:08

Well Anal is a name!

Jellycatrabbit · 19/02/2022 09:16

Ooh I like Anomalie too.

Bob l'eponge Grin

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 19/02/2022 11:22

Clafoutis makes a lovely name!

UserBotLurking9to5 · 19/02/2022 11:25

Wow, that's funny, Anomalie sounds so pretty!!

I kind of like Excel I confess.

UserBotLurking9to5 · 19/02/2022 11:30

Fleur de Marie is a character in a series of books but we must be missing something because the couple who wanted to name their daughter fleur de marie, when they were told no, they appealed it but their appeal was unsuccessful!

ofwarren · 19/02/2022 11:30

[quote IShouldBeWriting]Wow! Fleur de Marie!

What's the reason? My phone won't translate it for some reason

BeefSupreme · 19/02/2022 11:31

I don't see how the names Fleur De Marie and Daisygual are that bad that they'd ruin a child's life.
Is the name Astrid allowed in France because it's not that different to Asterix?

Bob L'eponge though Grin

UserBotLurking9to5 · 19/02/2022 11:34

Think it's something to do with having the middle name 'de' ??
The registrar suggested Fleur - Marie but that was not what they wanted.

Crimesean · 19/02/2022 11:35

Those are all terrible names, thank God the French have that law!

For those puzzled by Fleur de Marie, she's a character in a detective series. It'd be like naming your kid Hercule Poirot Smith or similar.

RaraRachael · 19/02/2022 11:37

I wish they would do this here. Mind you we always have a good giggle going through the list of new pupils coming in to school and try to choose this year's most ridiculous one Grin

BeefSupreme · 19/02/2022 11:39

@ofwarren

The parents have been fighting for 13 years to get Fleur De Marie's name recognised. They even took it to the European Court of Human Rights. The Court found that the French government had not violated any human rights by refusing the parents to register the name they wanted. That's the jist of it.

Beachsidesunset · 19/02/2022 11:40

I can imagine Fleur de Marie (Flower of Mary) being a euphemism.

ImInStealthMode · 19/02/2022 11:43

Mini-cooper is excellent. I was once chatting to a group of people we met on holiday, and one of them was quite reluctant to give us his name and I quote 'because then we'd know him' (although he eventually did).

We googled him afterwards obviously, largely due to his secrecy - turns out him and his wife had been rejected by the Swedish courts for trying to call their baby Superman and he was all over the news Shock

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/02/2022 11:44

I wouldn’t call this being strict..

AngelinaFibres · 19/02/2022 11:47

Perhaps it's the French equivalent of lady garden, front bottom, foof SmileSmile

AngelinaFibres · 19/02/2022 11:48

*Fleur de Marie that is

AngelinaFibres · 19/02/2022 11:49
