I have come to like Patience, ( I like the meaning, wanted to be a mum my whole life).

My mum hates it and says it's too religous.

Do you think it is liveable with ?

I actually quite like Patience though as with any other virtue name, there is a risk that she will end up being rather impatient.

IShouldBeWriting · 17/02/2022 10:04

Promise dim Prom
Constance dim Connie
Hope, Hopeful

Are all less demanding - Patience is quite a hard one to live up to.

Patricia dim Pasha is lovely

RupertOscar1999 · 17/02/2022 10:12

I know someone named Patience she's such a sweet lady.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 10:15

I like the name Patience too. Lovely .

watchtheglitterdustswirl · 17/02/2022 10:16

I don't like it at all. Sorry OP!

OffToButtonM00n · 17/02/2022 10:28

Not a fan, sorry. Prefer Constance or Verity from the ‘virtue’ name list.

DropYourSword · 17/02/2022 10:30

I like it.

I knew a Patience and her surname was a two syllable surname that also started with P. The alliteration worked!

Happenchance · 17/02/2022 11:01

I hate it. It perpetuates the idea that women should be patient. Unfortunately we still live in a world where being impatient is often seen as a strength in men but a negative in women, e.g. an impatient businessman takes no nonsense and gets the job done whereas an impatient businesswoman is a nag/bitch/insert insult in here.

Also, it's the name that Roy and Hayley Cropper gave their daughter in Corrie.

SummaLuvin · 17/02/2022 11:11

I don’t necessarily think religious when I hear the name. My stronger assumption would be that Patience was from an African family - particularly Nigerian or Zimbabwean. Not that it’s a bad thing just my immediate instinct on hearing the name.

I would be more off put that you want to name her Patience because you have been patient waiting for a child, seems to make the name about you and your expectations and desires, rather than a name for her in her own right.

Concur with PP that there is always a risk she could have a personality at odds with the virtue.

Ultimately, while I don’t particularly like it, it’s not a terrible name to give a child, and I don’t think it would be something that isn’t ‘livable’ if you love it.

MintyGreenDream · 17/02/2022 11:15

If she ever impatient she'd have kids or adults saying patience, patience!.I wouldnt

MintyGreenDream · 17/02/2022 11:15

got impatient I meant

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 17/02/2022 11:20

I like it. The thing with names though is that people do tend to grow into them. I knew someone who gave her baby an incredibly unusual name that had a few raised eyebrows but now her dd is 16, you really couldn’t imagine her being called anything else and it suits her perfectly .
Go with what you love

JustWonderingIfYou · 17/02/2022 11:27

I think its awful as a name.

Also dislike your reasoning of wanting to be a mum your whole life- this will be your daughters name for her whole life, but odd to make it so much about you!

Agree with this, sorry OP

That would be my first thought too.
I don't particularly like it, I think it's a big name to live up to and could get made fun of.

You are naming your child, not yourself.

Nothing stopping you from changing your own name.

OrlandointheWilderness · 17/02/2022 11:38

I love the name patience.

Classica · 17/02/2022 11:40

I think having a virtue name would be a pain in the ass. Every time she was impatient about something there'd be some stupid gag made. Ugh, so tiresome! Plus being patient is so overrated anyway.

Her name doesn't need to reflect your experience.

I agree. Appalling assocations with the story of Patient Griselda in the Decameron and the Canterbury Tales -- basically, aristocrat tests the loyalty of his peasant wife by pretending he has killed their children and then married someone else, but Griselda doesn't complain and is eventually given her children back and lauded by the sadistic prick she married for her patience.

Also, I think of it as a traditional donkey name, as it's supposed to be a virtue of donkeys. I think it's used as a donkey name in at least a couple of Enid Blyton books.

What about Constance if you like virtue names?

I adore virtue names but don't like Patience as I can't think kf any nice nicknames and worried she'd get Pat which I hate.

I love:
Constance (nickname Connie)
Joy
Mercy
Honor
Hope
Faith
Clemency (nickname Clemmie or Cece)

I think they're so beautiful

Oops, i didn't mean to quote a post and then make an irrelevant comment

FayCarew · 17/02/2022 13:27

I like it but now have an earworm

KimDeals · 17/02/2022 13:30

I am not mad about it. It’s a bit drippy and severe. Neither a good thing or a bad thing but I can hear guns n roses singing patience now … it’s not a bad song!

I love verity and Constance through. They have a bit of clout.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/02/2022 13:31

Maybe as a middle name if it has meaning to you.

It's a bit of a put-downy-don't-expect-to-much-of-life-missy sort of name. I wouldn't want it. Constance, Faith, Hope - all fine.

pigcon1 · 17/02/2022 13:33

This is the 21st century - please do not do this.
