Do any of your chosen names get compliments?

The names we chose for our DC are quite common so don’t and I wouldn’t expect them to but I grew up with regular (nice) comments about my name as it’s a bit unusual.

In particular interested for boys names as trying to think of one that’s quite safe but also a bit different!

Yes.

DD (low top 100) gets 'oh, lovely. That's one of my favourites'.
DS (full name low 200s, goes by a very rare nickname in the 1300s) gets 'that's a COOL name!'

bloominglovelyorange · 10/02/2022 19:49

@ZoyaTheDestroyer which name do you prefer? DD or DS's?

No-one's ever asked me that before! I don't think I could choose. I love them both. DD's name was my suggestion and a name I had loved for many years. DS's was DH's suggestion so I hadn't lived with it for as long but it is so perfect for him.

SisterAgatha · 11/02/2022 08:06

My eldest did but his name is now popular so there are more of them.

Middle is named after a lovely family member so he gets more shock than compliments. It’s a very old man’s name, not heard of for children these days.

My daughter gets complicated on hers all the time but again this might wear off as the name grows in popularity. It’s from a book.

Peccary · 11/02/2022 12:17

DD is 4 now and we still get a lot of compliments on her name, Juliet (well known but not used much, crops up a lot on here though.

She was a larger baby, one acquaintance said "that's a very delicate name for such a big baby" Grin

YerAWizardHarry · 11/02/2022 12:19

I’ve had three different people tell me they named their child the same/similar name in part because of my DS. He was very cute when he was little to be fair! It’s a very popular name though

itssquidstella · 11/02/2022 12:21

@Enko I really like Conrad!

Also a big fan of Hector, it's on our list for DS1.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2022 12:21

Yes, Alexander and Leo. Normal names but lovely ones IMO.

JakeyRolling · 11/02/2022 12:22

DSs name is very well known but fairly unusual in someone his age. I think the youngest I personally know is in his mid 30s.

Loads of people comment on how unusual it is in a toddler.

itssquidstella · 11/02/2022 12:22

@TheGratefulBread Ruth or Miriam?

Wildrobin · 11/02/2022 14:32

I can understand Juliet getting compliments. It’s a lovely name and I only know two with it

Love Juliet. Was high on my list but DH vetoed it.

Our final 2 for DD were Julia and Joy.

We chose Joy and get lots of compliments on it.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 11/02/2022 16:26

Ds1 has a name which is often commented on, my favourite time was at a zoo when DS was lagging behind and I said "come on DsName stay with us" and a man walking past turned to the person he was with and said "What a cool name!" And then repeated the name with a sort of announcer voice.

It does seem.to be a name men like more than women as I've been told by four separate men that Ds has a great name and they'd have used it for their own son of their wives had let them.

Bluemamma · 11/02/2022 20:10

I have a Jamie and Sean and I had a few comments saying lovely names and go so well together for little brothers. However as PP said, you never really know if compliments are genuine or not… most important thing is that you (and dad) love the names x

Danaos · 11/02/2022 20:16

I have a Peter. People were very Hmm when he was named. In fact one 'friend' exclaimed with surprise 'We thought you would go for some pretentious nonsense!' .

It's a brilliant name. No-one else in the school is called Peter except for teachers. It is cute on a baby charming on a child and fine for a man. I love it and love it and love it even more each day.

Wildrobin · 11/02/2022 22:30

Peter is a great name, surprised it’s not a lot more popular and just the sort I’m looking for but dh not sure on this or most of my suggestions and it’s so unpredictable! I’d love a name like this though that is strong but not overused

The more I dislike a name the more enthusiastic I sound so as to avoid the parents realising that I hate it. If it's a 'normal' name I probably won't say anything. Can't remember anyone commenting on my choice of names but then, apart from family, no one really did years ago.

CheesePlantMurderer · 12/02/2022 06:00

My son's name always gets favourable comments. It's not unusual or unique but not common in there here parts for any age (yet) and definitely not a 19 year old.

Rory loves his name being uncommon.

Gardeningcreature · 12/02/2022 06:07

I agree that people feel obliged to comment and say how nice the name is. They are hardly going to burst out laughing are they?

scandikate · 12/02/2022 06:25

My ds's name is quite uncommon (outside top 200) and it rarely gets complimented. There is often a comment like - that's unusual or it gets misheard. It used to bother me a lot so I gave my dd a much more common name (top 30) and that gets so many compliments almost every time I tell someone it. I love them both but love that my ds is always the only one with the name.

IfCanCanICan · 12/02/2022 06:38

My DS is called Jonah. Before he was born, I'd not met any. The only ones I know of now is an older boy in his school with the same name and a friend of a friend has a younger boy called Jonah. I think it fits the bill of not yoonique but not too popular. I've had quite a few positive comments about. Best being a school mum I'd never met/spoken to before telling me she'd decided to call her unborn son Jonah because she'd heard me call my son across the playground and instantly loved it.

I imagine it's a bit marmite though...no one's ever said anything to me about it, but I've heard a few people use the phrase 'I'm a bit of a Jonah' to say they're unlucky.

Rosiiiiie · 12/02/2022 06:50

My first DS has a very common name so we don’t get comments on it.
My second DS is only 3 weeks but somehow strangers always comment on his name saying how lovely it is (Oisín).

worriedmummyofboys · 12/02/2022 07:05

I have a Hector and I always get compliments on his name

worriedmummyofboys · 12/02/2022 07:06

I also have a Peter op

RussianSpy101 · 12/02/2022 07:11

My 3 have very normal, well used names but I often get “lovely names” or “oh they’re nice normal names” which I don’t think is necessarily a compliment, just a sign they don’t like unique names.

I know brothers called Hector and Jasper. I think Hector is a rather marmite name but Jasper is lovely.
