Mavis or Rosalie

We have welcomed a baby girl last week and aren’t able to decide her name. We have siblings Olivia (nn Olive), Arthur and George. We can’t seem to decide between Mavis with potential nn Mae or Rosalie nn Rose/Rosie. Which one do you prefer? Family is very split between the two so all feedback very welcome.

Going against the grain and say Mavis. But I’m someone who gave my child a name MN considers completely frumpy/old & ugly. Rosalie is nice but there are so many Rosies around these days.

SummaLuvin · 09/02/2022 09:34

I have a cuddly toy orangutang called Mavis Georgiana (jaw-jay-nuh), it started as a joke as it is a frumpy name, but actually it has a real charm to it.

Rosalie is very pretty, however Twilight has ruined the name for me as it's my immediate association. I also think Rose, an obvious nn, is really bland.

babyjellyfish · 09/02/2022 13:47

Rosalie.

babyjellyfish · 09/02/2022 13:47

I'd go with the nickname Rosa though.

scottishnames · 09/02/2022 16:18

I like Mavis - and the meaning 'song-thrush/song-bird' is pretty.
It's a surprisingly modern name. Invented in 1895 by Marie Corelli - very famous popular romantic/fantasy novelist.

Personally, I think it's prettier than Olive, but I have no wish - obviously! - to criticise existing children's names. So please excuse me saying this.
I don't dislike Rosalie, but I prefer Rosalind/Rosamund.

Rosalie.
My mum was called Mavis..... If she was still alive she'd be 77 yet she hated her old lady name. Even her shortened version was naff (( Mave)). Just no.

IVflytrap · 09/02/2022 17:46

I love Mavis and think it's a pretty, sweet name, with a nice meaning to it, but I know I'm in the minority.

"Rose" type names are having a bit of a "moment" and the fact they'll date due to their popularity would put me off a little.

But ultimately, choose whichever you most prefer. Smile

RuthW · 09/02/2022 17:51

Do you mind the two different pronunciations of Rosalie? If do choose Mavis.

StopForAMinute · 09/02/2022 17:53

Rosalie

EezyOozy · 09/02/2022 17:55

NOT MAVIS

PlanetNormal · 09/02/2022 18:00

Rosalie by a mile.

I really don’t like this silly fashion of exhuming awful granny names, eg Mavis, Ada, Enid etc.

lovescaca · 09/02/2022 18:03

I like Mavis, I'm expecting a baby girl and quite like this name x

Loveisthere · 09/02/2022 18:17

Well I don't really know Rita

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/02/2022 18:26

I’m surprising myself here by saying Mavis. But actually it’s very similar to May and Meave, so why not? You can be at the vanguard of the next granny chic revival.

I love a lot of Rose names but think Rosalie is twee - maybe Rosanna?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 09/02/2022 18:49

It feels a bit soon for a Mavis revival. There are still lots of Mavis's in their 70s, so it will be another 20 years before it doesn't have old lady vibes. And I'm not saying that to be ageist - I'm ancient, myself. But there is a strong association between names and particular generations.

DramaAlpaca · 09/02/2022 18:56

Rosalie, by a long way.

Growuppeople · 09/02/2022 18:58

Mavis! That’s a great name added to the list

8stone13 · 09/02/2022 21:51

I have a dog called Mavis, it really suits her but I honestly don't think it's due a revival for a child 😀

Maeve would work.

Rosalie is delightful, as is Rose, Rosa, & Rosie for a little one.

EmmaC78 · 09/02/2022 21:53

Sorry but not Mavis.

DoodleBelle · 09/02/2022 21:55

Rosalie definitely

Classica · 09/02/2022 23:19

Congratulations on your new arrival!

However, I am shook at the idea of this helpless baby potentially being lumbered with a minging moniker like Mavis.

Call her Rosalie and scrub Mavis from your mind.

Appleseesaw · 10/02/2022 10:46

Rosalie! It’s so pretty with equally pretty nicknames.

AnaMRT · 10/02/2022 16:51

Thank you so much for all your feedback ladies! I really do appreciate it! It’s nice to get very honest feedback. I was interested in Mavis as a name due to the meaning ‘song thrush’ and the fact that Maeve is popular along with Ava etc… So I thought it could be a bit different and have those vintage vibes… but I see that most people like the sound of Rosalie better. Two people in my family have said separately that she looks like a Rose/Rosie when they first met her so we came up with Rosalie to lengthen it a bit.. It is our last baby so I do want to give her a pretty name that hopefully she will like when she is older. Thank you to all once again for all your comments and suggestions x

Rosalie is lovely, Mavis is not!

Congratulations on your new arrival.
