Any thoughts on this name for a boy?

Really don’t mind it at all and I have known two!

One was a friends brother who pronounced it “Joe-leeyon”
Another was someone I worked with who pronounced it Joll-ion - he was lovely and not particularly posh

fallfallfall · 04/02/2022 16:45

never heard of it; would assume jolly-on and think jog-on
nothing wrong with Leon.

Thunderpunt · 04/02/2022 16:48

Went to school with a Jolyon in the 80's and he was lovely. Very sporty, intelligent and all round nice kid. Regular secondary school as well, nothing terribly posh about him, pretty middle class family. Nice name

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/02/2022 16:48

I am another northerner and would not pronounce it jolly-on. Ridiculous (and insulting) stereotype of a thick northerner!

TheBareTree · 04/02/2022 16:50

We’re not all thick!

You beat me to it!

I know 2 Jolyons, both prn Joe-lee-on 1 is early 20s, he's a really nice lad, posh but down to earth, dresses mostly in jeans or chinos(navy or beigy) with casual shirts and blazer or rugby tops.
The other is in his 50s and is a vv posh, old money 'tally ho' gun weilding 'shoot the bastard deer/bird' type. A completely arrogant and obnoxious prick. He mostly wears(when not in shooting gear) cords or chinos in either mustard, burnt orange pink or red, with check or plaid shirts and cashmere v neck jumper(pink, brown or blue) which in summer is draped over his shoulders with the arms loosely tied. He has a disobedient lab called Mungo..... oh and did I mention he's a prick?

Adatwistscientist · 04/02/2022 16:56

It was on my list with Soames and Digby! But then I came to my senses.

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 04/02/2022 17:01

Wasn't Soames the abusive prick in The Forsyte Saga?

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 04/02/2022 17:02

Think Damian Lewis played him in the more recent adaptation.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 04/02/2022 18:20

I like it, but that may be because I have a lovely friend called Jolyon (everyone pronounces it Jo-lee-un) It doesn't sound posh to me.

Synchrony · 04/02/2022 22:21

I know one in his late 20s. He is very public school and pronounces it Jolly-on. I've never heard the Joe-leon version.

craftyminer · 04/02/2022 22:31

I'd assume the kid is named after a Pokémon

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/02/2022 22:48
@tillytoodles1

The person who is considering it pronounced it Jolly On. I've only ever seen it written down. We are northern though 😀
I do think they should pronounce it properly, or it’s going to make him look really silly.

Laureatus · 04/02/2022 23:02

Just makes me think of the Forsyte Saga 🙂

Phrenologistsfinger · 04/02/2022 23:07

It’s the name of a fox murdering misogynist so for that reason it’s a hard NO from me.

NoResolutionsHere · 04/02/2022 23:09

I thought the people saying "it's on my list" were being funny 🤣, you are right? Are people just picking random words and amalgamating them to create names now 🤔😆

Jolyon, he wears red trousers.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2022 23:17

Like it very much.

ThePennyJustDropped · 04/02/2022 23:20

In my head a Jolyon would be dressed much like Michael Portillo on one of his train tours. And would also be similarly aged, I can't imagine a a baby or toddler Jolyon but probably just because I've never met one.

BikiniB0tt0m · 04/02/2022 23:20

No

MrWhippyBloon · 04/02/2022 23:22

I like it. I pronounce it Joe-lee-on despite being northern and it makes me think of Rupert Graves (yum) and Jolyon Palmer, both of whom I like

Cheesechips · 05/02/2022 02:34

Oh my goodness, the worst non name I've heard yet!

MerlinsBeard87 · 05/02/2022 02:40

I really love this name, nickname jolly is very cute. But it will forever be associated with the forsyte saga so I just don't think it's useable
