Eleanor
Norah
Annaliese (pronounced Anna-Lee)
Madeline (pronounced mad-e-lynn)

Favourite at the minute is Madeline (not bothered by McCann connection)

I only like Norah

In what language is Annaliese pronounced Anna-Lee? It's normally Anna-Lee-se

AlexissFreeenncch · 02/02/2022 15:45

@Blubells I’m in Ireland and any I know pronounce it Anna-Lee

AdaColeman · 02/02/2022 15:46

I like them all except Annaliese.
You are often going to be disappointed if you expect an unusual name to be pronounced in a specific way.

ISmellBurnings · 02/02/2022 16:10

Why would it be pronounced Anna Lee? It has an S.

Blubells · 02/02/2022 16:12

Maybe the Irish don't pronounce the S at the end of words?

AlexissFreeenncch · 02/02/2022 16:25

@ISmellBurnings I just know the two girls I know with that name both pronounce it Anna Lee. I presumed Anna - Lee - se was the German pronunciation in line with the origin of the name and it had adapted to Anna-Lee in English speaking countries!

All nice. I love Annaliese but will have lots of pronounciation issues. Otherwise probably Norah is favourite. I do like Madeleine but do think of McCann a bit.

Fivebeanchilli · 02/02/2022 16:31

I really like Anneli but the ones I know who pronounce it as you want it spell it like this. Annaliese feels like a totally different name to me.
Eleanor is lovely.
Norah is ok but I prefer the Nora spelling.
Madeline is nice too.
I would go for Anneli or Eleanor myself.

20viona · 02/02/2022 16:33

Nora without the H on the end

Anoisagusaris · 02/02/2022 16:34

I’m in Ireland and only know one person named Annaliese and the ‘s’ is pronounced. I’ve never heard of Anna-lee (no matter what way it’s spelt).

RandomQuest · 02/02/2022 16:39

I’d spell it Madeleine if you want the Lynn pronunciation, I’d assume if it’s spelt Madeline it would be the Line variation. Lovely name though.

Anna-Lee but spelt Annaliese is just confusing but maybe not in Ireland IDK.

I really like Eleanor but Norah is my favourite.

Flutterflybutterby · 02/02/2022 16:41

I love Annaliese pronounced the normal way. If you want Anna-lee I'd change the spelling as Anna-lee isn't a correct pronunciation.

Second favourite Eleanor, also really like Norah.

Don't like Madeline.

Tulips21 · 02/02/2022 16:41

Elanor and Nora ( no H on end) I like.
Annaliese- will be pronounced with the 'S' everytime, unless you spell it ' Annalee/Annaleigh.
Madeline for me has the 'MCcann' part im afraid

AlexissFreeenncch · 02/02/2022 16:44

Thanks @Tulips21 Annaleigh could work. I was taking pronunciation from the two I know who spell it Annaleise but it seems to be causing some contention here!

Bimblybomeyelash · 02/02/2022 16:44

I like Madeleine. And Maddy for a nn.

I prefer Nora to Eleanor. But I also think that Nora is a perfectly acceptable nn for Eleanor.

SageRosemary · 02/02/2022 16:47
@Blubells I’m in Ireland and any I know pronounce it Anna-Lee
I'm in Ireland and only know people who pronounce it as Anna-Leese

Like one of our best know sailors, Olympian Annalise Murphy, granted a slightly different spelling. The s is never silent.

Perhaps spelling the name as Annalie (Finnish) or Annalee (Hebrew Biblical) would give you the version of pronunciation you like.

Nora is also lovely. I prefer Nora to Norah for simplicity.

rambleonplease · 02/02/2022 17:01

I like Eleanor and Madeline. Not so much the other 2.

Blubells · 02/02/2022 17:06

I was taking pronunciation from the two I know who spell it Annaleise

That's an even more confusing spelling - pronounced Anna lye se ?!

TempsPerdu · 02/02/2022 17:07

Like Eleanor - not a particular favourite, as it’s a bit too classic and sensible for me, but it’s a nice name and you can’t really go wrong with it.

Anneliese is pretty but agree that you’ll almost inevitably have pronunciation issues. The only one I’ve met was pronounced Anna-lees. I have come across a few Anneli/Annelies but always with those spellings.

Not keen on Madeleine - not because of the McCann connection, just that something about it feels a bit prim and proper for me, and I don’t like any of the standard nicknames.

Can’t warm to Nora either - just seems frumpy to me (not helped by all those I’ve met irl) and I don’t like the ‘nor/gnaw’ sound. But if you like it you could go for Eleanor with nn Nora and use both.

Eleanor would be my pick, but with nn Leni or Lena.

AlexissFreeenncch · 02/02/2022 17:13

Thanks all good to get views.

I don’t like nicknames @TempsPerdu it would be the full name for family (obviously can’t stop friends using a nickname). Although I have a long name like Catherine myself and friends never shortened it.

Definitely classic and sensible is what I’m aiming for. I don’t like all the Evie/Grace/Freya/Ava type trends in names or most of the new modern names that are popular at the minute.

This.
rollercoasterofemotions · 02/02/2022 17:28

How about Madelyn?

Norah is also lovely!

TempsPerdu · 02/02/2022 17:28

@AlexissFreeenncch In that case for ‘classic and sensible’ Eleanor certainly fits the bill! Smile Plus I find it that bit more elegant and less dull than other similar names - I think, along with Alice/Anna/Elizabeth/Catherine it’s one of the few genuinely timeless girls’ names. Agree much better than Evie, Ava et al.

Anoisagusaris · 02/02/2022 17:31

We might ignore the h in many th words but the Irish most definitely pronounce the s at the end of words. Otherwise we’d have huge difficulties with most plurals Wink

LuckyWithMyLot · 02/02/2022 17:37

My best friend's name is Eleanor but she uses Nora as a nickname
