Anneliese?

What does everyone think of the name Anneliese shortened to Anna/Annie?

I was watching the Diary of Anne Frank at 3 o'clock yesterday morning (we love the insomnia) and I thought her full name (Anneliese) was beautiful and can't get it out of my head.

Full name would be Anneliese Jane (after a late relative).

DH and I can't agree on ANYTHING and when I mentioned it this morning his response of 'not terrible' has been the biggest breakthrough we've had in ages.

My only reservations would be that it's quite uncommon and that the spelling may be a little confusing at first.

I really like it, I know an Anneliese in her thirties and she really suits it.

OldKingCole · 23/01/2022 10:08

I love it - such a beautiful name. I know one (40s now) so really unusual when we were in college - and was never shortened. I love it.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/01/2022 10:08

I know a few Annalieses, mostly in their 30s and 40s although one, slightly oddly, is now as "Fliss". I think it's mainstream.enough that people won't generally struggle with the spelling.

Annie is a really lovely nn, so I would go with that, but the full name is so pretty that I would tend to use that where possible.

Foxesinsockses · 23/01/2022 10:21

Anneliese
Annaliese
Annalise
Annelise
Analyse (I think this last one may have been an autocorrect 😀)

Have had them all, doesn’t bother me, everyone always says what a lovely name it is. AKA Anna.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/01/2022 11:00

Lovely

I think the Annalise spelling is also pretty authentic and would be easier.

I know an Italian Annalisa.

elfran · 23/01/2022 11:04

Lovely, it's a family name for me. Just be aware that pronunciations may vary - I would automatically pronounce it as 4 syllables in the German way, while you might be thinking of a more Anglicised 3-syllable way?

Snowiscold · 23/01/2022 11:06

I like it, but I think pronunciation would be a issue - it might not bother you. I’d pronounce it with four syllables.

cheeseaholic · 23/01/2022 11:11

My DD (16) is Annelise and we call her Annie - her friends call her Ann but she always introduces herself by her full name 😊

I originally wanted Anneliese but glad we chose a simpler spelling. I do notice people spell it wrong with an Anna sometimes though!

Rainbowqueeen · 23/01/2022 11:16

It’s a lovely name, both the full version and the shorter nicknames.

SummaLuvin · 23/01/2022 11:25

It’s one of those names where it’s uncommon, most people won’t know one, but it is familiar.

Spelling issues doesn’t bother me, but is a deal breaker for some, that has to be your call. Common names like Sean, Claire, and Catherine all have multiple accepted spellings but it doesn’t stop many parents choosing them every year.

StopForAMinute · 23/01/2022 12:23

Beautiful name. Love Anna/Annie as nicknames too.

VanillaAndOrange · 23/01/2022 13:21

How are you thinking of pronouncing it? I like anna-LEEZ and possibly even anna-LEEZa, but I'm not so keen on anna-LEECE.

Lemonweightloss · 23/01/2022 13:26

I like it. I was unsure at first ; had to say it a few times, but yes, it's lovely. I love the nns, too, especially Anna.
I like the spelling Annaliese, and the pronunciation Anna - Leece.
Love your middle name / reasoning, too.

DramaAlpaca · 23/01/2022 13:40

Lovely, if pronounced with four syllables.

Littlepaws18 · 23/01/2022 15:05

I love it, it's my favourite name and a great role model to base it on.

TheVanguardSix · 23/01/2022 15:10

It's my 18 year old niece's name, so obviously, I love it!

TedsaidFred · 23/01/2022 15:10

I really like this name, I'd love to hear from ppl who have used it/know ppl with it how they pronounce it. Is there a significant pronunciation difference between Annaliese and Anneliese? How does it sound with 4 syllables, my instinct is for 3.. Annaleese.

WheelieBinPrincess · 23/01/2022 15:13

Three syllables had a softer ‘s’ sound.

So like An-Na-leece.

Binthescales · 24/01/2022 10:52

Thank you so much to everyone who commented.

Pronunciation would be Anna-Lease.

I completely agree with the comment that it's different yet quite familiar, I couldn't work out to how articulate that. I find it a really comforting name.

I also feel it's a name that she could grow into. At first I struggled to spell it but then I got the I before E in my head and if flowed really easily. Again, people learn to spell/pronounce harder names all the time (Niamh, Claire, Aisha, Sean etc - hell even George is an odd spelling if you think about it!)

It's definitely my top contender at the moment! Thanks so much for the kind words once again, I expected to be slated.

I think it's beautiful. I wanted it as dc's middle name but dp vetoed.

Bluemamma · 26/01/2022 11:48

Lovely name, never heard it but it looks and sounds very feminine and nice

Enko · 26/01/2022 11:54

Its my aunts name and I have always thought it was pretty. Odd as I don't care for Anne/Anna or Lise/Lisa but together its really lovely.

Tulips21 · 26/01/2022 12:04

lovely.
I spell and pronounce it as ' Annaliese' nn Anna but would always try to keep full name used

Dragonfly2022 · 26/01/2022 12:23

Beautiful! I love it.

It always surprises me that my parents nearly called me Annaliese, especially since they chose such a dullard name in the end (imo)

Dragonfly2022 · 26/01/2022 12:24

Re: above - a dullard name with the least common spelling to boot 🙄
