Short, strong boy names - help please

I'm over 37 weeks so this is getting increasingly urgent but DH and I just cannot find boy names we both like. We don't know what flavour of baby we're having, but we've found we agree much more easily on girl names.

I'd prefer the name to be quite short, or have a short diminutive. We're both Scottish and live here but whilst I like the idea of a Scottish name I'm struggling to find one we both like, so it doesn't have to be Scottish at all.

We like some Old Testament names but can't agree on the ones we do like. And I'm not after any Elijahs, Elis or Noahs anyway.

Surname is two syllables but 8 letters so would prefer a shorter first name and has some hard consonants in it. Would like the names to sound good together so am keen on things that have R, K, V or I sounds in them but not absolutely necessary. Would prefer not to end in an S as surname starts with an S, but no objection to it starting with one as I've an alliterative name myself (not S).

Girls names we're agreed on are Vera or Olive (although other 'v' names like Ivy and Violet are long listers).

Boy names we like but don't seem right for various reasons (including family members, too popular, or just don't seem quite right for an intangible reason) include Finn, Seth, Benjamin, Ã’ran, Ivo. I really like Finn but DH is a bit less keen and it's been so popular for years that I don't want to consign my child to being Finn S all the way through school as DH and myself both experienced that. Particularly as our girl names are less popular (although obviously Olive is increasingly so, it's just that it's been a favourite of ours for years). And I don't like Flynn!

Sorry for that rather long winded intro! Any suggestions are very welcome (and happy to take girl names too in case there's something we're missing).

@Justjoinedforthis

Saul
We have a Saul and we love his name, always get compliments on it. Some people think that it’s a negative biblical name but when we looked into it really isn’t. We loved the meaning of ‘longed for’ which felt very apt for our wee man after a long journey to have him. It feels strong, solid yet quite fresh I think!

If two syllables OK (as in Vera or Olive), then (mostly Scottish):

Dougal, Gregor, Ewen, David/Davy, Robert, Grant, Peter, Bruce, Ranald, Duncan, Lorne, Bryce, Blair, Alan/Allan, Coll, Finbar/Fintan, Frazer, Hugh, Innes, Maxwell, Sholto

Victor as suggested by pp is good if you like V names.

Love Fergus, DH loves Murdo. We had girls but it was on list and still is.

Has anyone done the harmony tests before? I didn't last time but I'm obviously older this time...

AndrewPeacock · 15/01/2022 17:20

Appreciate your DH isn't a fan but if it's just popularity that's the issue with Finn then we're in Scotland with a Finn and he's certainly not one of many. There's no others in his year at school (one 2 years below him) and never had another Finn in football/swimming etc. "Doublers" include:

Harry
Harris (so many!)
Charlie
Alfie
Jax/Jaxon
Alastair
Calum
Aaron/Arran (also loads!)

@SeptemberDreams Saul is such a lovely name, was on our list

HunkyPunk · 15/01/2022 17:27

I used to babysit three brothers - Guy, Ross and Bruce. Always thought they were really strong names, and suited the boys, who were lovely. Think there was some Scottish heritage there Smile
