I’m generally not a fan of backwards words as names.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/01/2022 09:43

Newdawn
Sunlit
One
Nine

Confused
CheshireCats · 14/01/2022 09:45

1 out of ten..... must try harder

SleepingStandingUp · 14/01/2022 09:45

When you say novel names do you mean as characters in a book? If it's Sci fi / fantasy yo u can get away with names like this but you'd need a good rationale for why each character was given a backwards word

Blubells · 14/01/2022 09:45

Not very original Hmm

KirstenBlest · 14/01/2022 11:22

I was going to suggest
Rebecca
Emma
Emily
Jane Eyre...

KirstenBlest · 14/01/2022 11:26

Stoidiybdeman

ThirdElephant · 14/01/2022 11:27

When and where is your novel set? What genre?

ThirdElephant · 14/01/2022 11:29

Also, have you considered Balonz? He'd make a good protagonist in a dystopian future fic, I think.

ThirdElephant · 14/01/2022 11:32

If you're thinking of setting it a bit closer to home, possibly Boswell? I see him as a middle-aged post office manager living in a small town- the type where all the buildings are up a short flight of steps because of the lay of the land they've been built on.

SeanChailleach · 14/01/2022 11:52

I mean novel as new.

Dear God, don't start up Boswell again. Grin It was like some kind of terrible alternative universe full of men going up steps (or down? I've deliberately blotted out the details!), not to mention the OP's insistence that this was some hilariously witty apercu from her ILs or boyfriend's family, and definitely not a hoax.
SeanChailleach · 14/01/2022 11:59

Can you give me some examples of names you think are more original?

Why must I try harder? What would I get more marks for?

Surely Levon should be your first choice
Mundra · 14/01/2022 12:36

Levon is already a name! (albeit Armenian)

DefyingSanity · 14/01/2022 12:46

@KirstenBlest

Stoidiybdeman
🤣🤣🤣
DefyingSanity · 14/01/2022 12:48

How about X Æ A-12 I've never known any child with that name. Oh wait...damn Elon Musk stole my baby name!

TonkinLenkicks · 14/01/2022 12:48

@KirstenBlest wins the internet for today.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/01/2022 12:50

Why not put together a random collection of letters to make a nice sound instead of using a backwards word?

Shaboodigah
Elagardee
Oberlee
Ahdahdabee

Roosk · 14/01/2022 12:54

@KirstenBlest

Stoidiybdeman
Is it wrong I quite like that? Stoidiy for short. Grin
KirstenBlest · 14/01/2022 13:51

It offers several nn, @Roosk.

Deman
Stoidy
Stobdy
Dibby

I also like Ekorbmodnoc, Eko or Korby for short

Flipping words round is just a way of generating ideas. I think Tokien did invent his names by using a bunch of elements, so that the names sounded like they went together, hence Frodo, Drogo, Bilbo were all male hobbits, with the -o ending. Aragorn, Arathorn, Boromir, Faramir, Théoden, Éomer were all men. Arwen, Luthien, Beren were Elves, all you have that -en element, and then Galadriel, Elrond, Legolas - I don't know why they sound like they go together, perhaps I'm just used to hearing them.

sadpapercourtesan · 14/01/2022 13:55

You're talking about novelty names, not novel names. Which would be fine, if you were choosing a name for one of those teddies that comes out of an arcade machine, rather than a person who will have to carry it around for life Hmm

IVflytrap · 14/01/2022 14:02

Have you found yourself inspired by Nevaeh by any chance? Interesting how Neveah is an option but Esidarap or Efilretfa aren't... Grin
