How about

Resistessance
Spoons
Millennium
Sebastopolium

SeanChailleach · 15/01/2022 06:58

Millenia or Millenio
LeMarac in the style of LeVon I do like.

Sleeping try leaving the vowel and consonant clusters the right way, so you get Rast and Threa for Star and Earth. And float the r around you get Nurtas for Saturn.

The thing about Tilnus and Tesnus is that they do sound like names, and Nwadwen does if you know Welsh. (Sorry Welsh speakers if you don't like it). Eno and Enin are the only numbers that really work, although my spellcheck likes Névés and Nevele actually isn't bad...

I am (very slightly) intrigued to know why inventing names upsets people so much.

That's funny! How about Neas?! Nohj Enna is Anne backwards, but weirdly it works.....
Maireas · 15/01/2022 09:08

@Luredbyapomegranate

Nevaeh surely, it’s a classic of the genre

Or Lleh for a boy

I taught a girl called Pagan once, which was interesting when we came to the Roman Empire lessons referring to Pagans!

Maireas · 15/01/2022 09:10

@ThirdElephant

Also, have you considered Balonz? He'd make a good protagonist in a dystopian future fic, I think.
Or Znolab?
Roosk · 15/01/2022 09:12

Enniárg
Hmain
Ronoc
Esrioas
Ehmioac
Náhbois

Not sure Irish names really work — Ronoc isn’t bad.

Well I think in part it's the thought of the kid getting bullied when people realise he's a backwards one etc. So a sense of protectiveness over possible parental stupidity. Which is why it's lightened up since you said you didn't mean real kids

HoratioNightboy · 15/01/2022 12:17

What about instead of reversing the letters, reversing the syllables? This was actually a thing in the isle of Lewis in the 50s/60s (Scots used to like playing about with names). So:

Annabel -> Bellann, or Bellanna
Chrisanne or Chrisanna -> Ancris

Andrew -> Drewan

And so on. These were used as real names for real people, but you might find some interesting novel names that way. Onzbal, for example.

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/01/2022 12:24

You do have to be careful not to come up with something which is an actual word in another language. Especially not one with unfortunate connotations.

CarlatheJackal · 15/01/2022 12:28

Stapler
Stapla-Mae
Protracta

@HoratioNightboy That's really interesting, I had no idea. Genuine question, is that where the name Senga came from do you know?

HoratioNightboy · 15/01/2022 13:50

Hi @IVflytrap,

Yes, Senga comes from Agnes reversed. Although some have tried to link it to the Gaelic word seang, meaning slender, this is unlikely as it arose in the Scottish lowlands where Senga has been around since the 1870s, long before that part of Scotland saw a revival of interest in Gaelic.

SeanChailleach · 15/01/2022 14:25

How is Senga usually pronounced?

OP posts:
HoratioNightboy · 15/01/2022 15:00

Pronounced with a hard 'g', so SENG-gah. Or SENG-guh, if you're common. Smile

IVflytrap · 15/01/2022 15:06

@HoratioNightboy Thanks, I had assumed before that the comments about it being Agnes reversed were just jokes and that it had a separate origin, so that's really fascinating. Smile

HoratioNightboy · 15/01/2022 15:15

I've known half a dozen Sengas over the years, but only one was registered with that name. The others were all really Agnes, but hated it. I'm not sure Senga is much better but it least it would have seemed slightly cooler at the time!

IVflytrap · 15/01/2022 15:19

Grin I love the name Agnes, but I think I'm in the minority in that, at least in my neck of the woods.
