Cecilia?

Yay or nay?
Is it vintage? Cool? Old ladies' name? Is it becoming more popular? I think it's a lovely classic, not too bothered about meaning. I wonder if it might cause some spelling problems with Cecelia being an alternative.

I like it! People will probably spell it both ways 😅 also like cece as a nn

KloppsTeeth · 13/01/2022 14:07

I really like it. I know a very cool Celia, if that is also an option. Had I had a girl, Celia was on my list.

KloppsTeeth · 13/01/2022 14:08

Pressed post too soon. I meant I do like Cecelia as well as Celia, but I prefer that spelling Cecelia

Ahhhhhbisto · 13/01/2022 14:12

I like it lots. I do automatically start singing the song in my head when I hear it thoughGrin

ofwarren · 13/01/2022 14:12

Lovely name

Georgeskitchen · 13/01/2022 14:17

Yes it's lovely

groovergirl · 13/01/2022 14:22

Definitely vintage, cool and becoming popular -- which pleases me greatly as Cecilia was my GM's name and is my middle name. Cecilia is the more common spelling, but Cecelia works too. The cool factor has been around since the Simon and Garfunkel song about a sexually liberated woman who refuses to wait for satisfaction.

It's such a pretty name, but unfortunately it means "blind". However, Amelia means " without limbs", yet has been in the top 20 for years. Quite a few euphonious names have yucky meanings. Just go with Cecilia if you like it.

20thCenturyGhosts · 13/01/2022 14:35

I knew a Cecelia and everyone, literally everyone who met her started singing the song to her. She changed it to Celia in the end.
Lovely name though

Opti2021 · 13/01/2022 14:37

I like it but what about Cecily.

Etinoxaurus · 13/01/2022 14:37

Lovely! With all the kind Simon and Garfunkel references. Mine goes by Cee and Celia too.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 13/01/2022 14:40

I like that Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians but the name itself just sounds really prissy to me.

Itsnotdeep · 13/01/2022 15:01

my dd is christened Cecilia, although we call her something else. She loves it and loves the song (although might not have listened to the words!) . She is saying when she goes to secondary school we have to call her Cecilia and she wants to be known as it.

I don't think it's prissy - I think it's strong and elegant, but we do all hear names differently! My Cecilia is a very strong character and not at all prissy or frilly. I have no issues with the meaning and like that Cecilia is also the patron saint of musicians.

I actually love Celia too.

GVmama · 13/01/2022 15:36

So funny, my Mum is called Cecelia (known as Celia) and she HATED her name as a child in the 60s, she would be so bemused at the idea of it being used now. I think it’s a lovely sounding name though.

9ofpentangles · 13/01/2022 15:37

I don't mind the name, although, every time I hear it, I get the earworm - Cecilia, you're breaking my heart...

toastofthetown · 13/01/2022 16:36

I like Cecilia - though I prefer the similar Cecily. I don’t see it as a vintage name - it was never in the top hundred unlike Cecil. More of a lesser used classic.

It’s rising in popularity, though not very dramatically. I can see it rising more, but not being as popular as Olivia. The Dark Greener website is great for viewing name trends if you are in England and Wales and concerned with popularity rises.

Lovely

Marmelace · 13/01/2022 18:06

Yay, love it, intact I've got Simon and Farfunkal singing in my head now.

WeasilyPleased · 13/01/2022 22:37

I'm really sorry but it xounds a bit old ladies
knicker draw to me.

ZittiEBuoni · 13/01/2022 22:38

Patron saint of music, so it's a yes from me.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2022 22:57

I think most people will spell it Cecilia as it's the much more popular spelling both in the UK and internationally (where it is well used in a few countries) - it's also the original spelling derived from male name Cecil.

I find Cecilia pretty, classy and elegant sounding and it's never been popular enough in the UK to be thought especially vintage/retro/old lady imo. A 4 syllable name will often get shortened though so if you have a preference between Cece, Cee and Cissy, I'd get in first and introduce her as your preference.

4vrBubbles · 13/01/2022 23:01

Its a lovely name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/01/2022 23:13

Lovely and becoming pretty popular

Cecilia is the standard spelling. I think Cecelia will be annoying for her.

PatterPaws · 14/01/2022 21:18

Lovely name

adriftabroad · 14/01/2022 21:23

Love it and it is lovely in other languages too. Spain, France etc...

Seashor · 14/01/2022 21:23

Oh my goodness it’s absolutely dreadful. Agree with the prissy comments, laughing at the knicker drawer comment.
