Which of these girl names??

Our baby is only a few days old. We had a list of names pre-birth and we’ve got it down to two. Husband has a slight preference for one, but is happy with either. I really can’t decide. Would be interested to know what people think.

The two names are Agatha or Guinevere. And yes, would properly get shortened to Aggie or Guinie.

Thanks.

Agatha

Stormbraver99 · 10/01/2022 10:47

Guinevere

MeatyRvita · 10/01/2022 10:48

Guinevere

ISmellBurnings · 10/01/2022 10:48

I don’t like either but if I had to choose it would proper be Guinevere as I think Agatha is such an ugly name, and Aggie is awful. Sorry…

ISmellBurnings · 10/01/2022 10:49

*probably

freelions · 10/01/2022 10:50

I like both but prefer Agatha

If you use Guinie then be prepared for people to assume Gwynnie so potentially lots of correcting people

KezzabellaB · 10/01/2022 10:51

I don't like either really but I hugely dislike Agatha and in particular Aggie. Sorry.

CMhater · 10/01/2022 10:54

Prefer Agatha.
Don't like Guinevere but do like the similar (to me) Genevieve (not that you're askingGrin)

NeedHelpWhatAreYourThoughts · 10/01/2022 10:55

@freelions thanks for the heads up. To be honest we’d be happy with any spelling of the NN. Im sure in the future she might have a preference. But I’m aware people might pronounce/spell it differently and am happy to go with it. People spell husbands name wrong and there’s only 4 letters in it🤦‍♀️

@ISmellBurnings I’m sorry you find it ugly/awful. We’re obviously quite keen on it. Names do bring out some amazing reactions in people.

It was Agatha all along 😂
My vote is Guinevere. The 'Ag' sound in Agatha is sharp and carries on to the nickname too. I have synesthesia and to me it's a blue based black with a very sour taste.
Have you considered Gwendolyn?

Yeah, I was going to suggest Gwyneth!
SleepingStandingUp · 10/01/2022 11:07

Guinevere

NeedHelpWhatAreYourThoughts · 10/01/2022 11:10

@Lollipoppit yes we have. Gwendolyn is a beautiful name. We have a good friend with that name, which doesn’t put me off completely but I would like to use a different name. Being honest we’re also yo-yo-ing on spelling. Could be either Guinevere or Gwynevere. Which would mean NN would be Gwynie @freelions

Finding it interesting that Agatha is getting more of a reaction. I though it would have been Guinevere that would have been a more controversial name choice! Genuinely think we might end up pulling a name out the hat. And I love both, so will be happy. But also will be sad about not using whichever one we don’t use. Trying to work out which one i’ll be less sad about is hard work 🙈

Guinevere. I really like it. I like the similar Genevieve even more, though I’m sure you have considered this.

I’m not fond of Agatha, dislike the ‘ag’ sound, and makes me think of Agatha Trunchbull.

NeedHelpWhatAreYourThoughts · 10/01/2022 11:13

@DefyingSanity another lovely name. I just can’t get Gwyneth Paltrow out of my head. Will mention both Gwyneth & Gwendolyn to husband and see what he feels. Thanks for the ideas.

I'd choose Guinevere, mainly because I don't like Aggie.
You could use Vera as a nn for Guinevere, or even Gigi.

Pemba · 10/01/2022 11:14

Agatha is a very harsh name.

NeedHelpWhatAreYourThoughts · 10/01/2022 11:15

Geneiveve is a beautiful name, but there are quite a few in our lives so that’s ruled that one out. Thanks to those who have suggested it.

I know someone called Agatha, goes by Aggy. We always call her Aggy Dave.... To her face, she says it too! Aggy tends to mean aggressive these days.

Guinevere is ok.

Luanamaria · 10/01/2022 11:15

Agatha

AdaColeman · 10/01/2022 11:17

Isuelt (several spellings) is a lovely name with a similar vibe to Guinevere, if you are still open to suggestions.

NoSquirrels · 10/01/2022 11:17

I’d choose Guinevere but nn Gwen.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 10/01/2022 11:18

If you love both, and DH likes both but has a preference for one, then that's your answer! Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Names always get weird reactions on this site.

irishfarmer · 10/01/2022 11:24

I like Guinevere, I didn't really know how to say it until I thought about it. It's Gwyn - a - veer? But I like it and I have heard it, just didn't know how to spell it!

NeedHelpWhatAreYourThoughts · 10/01/2022 11:37

I think you can pronounce it “Gwyn-e/a-veer” or “Gwen-e/a-veer”. We would go with Gwyn (to rhyme with win).
