Thoughts on this with the nn Cy... is it too much of an expectation name/ try hard. We like the sounds Confused

Crunchymum · 05/01/2022 14:55

How are you pronouncing this name? (and the nickname for that matter)

emmathedilemma · 05/01/2022 14:55

Far too try hard IMO
Surely the nn would be Si not Cy?

LongestBedtimeStoryEver · 05/01/2022 14:57

Isn’t that the name of specsavers own-brand glasses?

ILoveShula · 05/01/2022 14:59

My thoughts too.
'Should have gone to Baby Names'

Not a good name - god of the underworld

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 05/01/2022 14:59

A bit too try hard for me I'm afraid

WimpoleHat · 05/01/2022 15:01

Very try hard! Sorry….

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 05/01/2022 15:02

Cyrus would give you nn Cy. I prefer that to Osiris I think.

Zog14 · 05/01/2022 15:04

Osiris (/oʊˈsaɪrɪs/, from Egyptian wsjr, Coptic ⲟⲩⲥⲓⲣⲉ)[2][3] is the god of fertility, agriculture, the afterlife, the dead, resurrection, life, and vegetation in ancient Egyptian religion. He was classically depicted as a green-skinned deity with a pharaoh's beard, partially mummy-wrapped at the legs, wearing a distinctive atef crown, and holding a symbolic crook and flail.

Above taken from Wiki. My 9 year old has been doing a class project on the Egyptians and Osiris featured regularly. Think that would be a bit much for a kid to cope with!

DayzeeDaresYou · 05/01/2022 15:05

Sirius (brightest star in the sky) or Sirus might be better choices.

resm · 05/01/2022 15:07

I know a Simon with the nickname Si, could be another option for you.

emmathedilemma · 05/01/2022 15:14

@LongestBedtimeStoryEver

Isn’t that the name of specsavers own-brand glasses?
I'm not sure if it's their own brand but they definitely sell them. I thought of that when I read it too but maybe because I'd been buying glasses last week www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/designer-glasses/osiris
RevolutionRadio · 05/01/2022 15:16

I thought of the shoe brand but only because I lived in skate shoes in the 00s

DillonPanthersTexas · 05/01/2022 15:17

Sounds like an eye infection

HamCob · 05/01/2022 15:31

Sorry but I saw this in active conversations without noticing which forum it was in and thought it was some sort of illness, along the lines of psoriasis or something 😳

Luckingfovely · 05/01/2022 15:51

It sounds like a cream for a nasty rash, to me.

wishingitwasfriday · 05/01/2022 15:51

Osiris is a clothing brand. Used to do very nice trainers that my OH wore, not sure if it's still around.

Skeumorph · 05/01/2022 15:55

Just not a very nice name alas! Fine to be different - there are some really lovely unusual names around that make you think 'Wow!'

This isn't one of them. Seriously, if you do like Cy/Si as a short form, Simon is lovely, classic and underused.

GemmaRuby · 05/01/2022 15:56

Yes it is very try-hard.
And Si is a very normal sounding nickname so it would be even more embarrassing for your DS when people assume he’s called Simon and he has to say oh it’s short for Osiris actually…

RuthW · 05/01/2022 16:10

Yep, just makes me think of my glasses.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 05/01/2022 16:55

God of the underworld - not ideal, unfortunately!

Cyrus, suggested above, is a similar sound and a bit more commonly used as a name?

BeefSupreme · 05/01/2022 16:57

What about Silas?

I like it but the cy things not going I work , has to be ozzy really which is brilliant.

PattyPan · 05/01/2022 17:01

Very try hard. Possibly makes sense if you are Egyptian? But completely bizarre otherwise.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/01/2022 17:02

I find the idea of naming a child after a god really, really bizarre. There are a few exceptions where the name is already very well established as a name - Diana and Freya spring to mind. But most of the rest just come across as pretentious and hubristic.
