None of my family (apart from DH) like this name at all but we love it so much.

We want to call our little boy Timothy.

I find it a bit weak / bland but I'm sure someone would level the same sort of criticism at my kids' names. If you both like it, crack on.

GoodnightGrandma · 30/12/2021 06:35

Lovely !
But never discuss names with family/friends, just tell them what it is when you’ve decided.

ThymeTravel · 30/12/2021 09:35

The general consensus is that it's a lovely name, which I'm delighted about! 😀

The only Timothy I know of is a fictional character. He was the Doctors son in Call the Midwife and he was a sweetheart ❤

I always think of 'Tim, Nice but Dim' but no one else his age will remember that. It's a good name.

PlainJane1000 · 30/12/2021 12:45

Interesting how many people say they find it lovely and yet you very rarely see it suggested or used in the last 20 years. I personally find it a very soft name and dislike it because of that.

@MerryChristmas21

Timothy is a good name!
Wow it is a nice name. I like this name
RipWheeler · 30/12/2021 12:58

I like it, go for it. Don’t discuss possible names with family or friends, it’s entirely up to you and DH. If you both agree then it’s job done. I told a pregnant friend my unusual chosen name for DC2, she gave birth 2 weeks before me and used the name!

Omg I would have been so upset!! Did you say anything to her about it?

You should have used the name too Flowers

I think people like the name, but like others more Grin

@Snow1n

Love it!! I wouldnt share potential names outside of you and dh because you will end up with a list as long as your arm of names you 'cant' use because someone once knew someone with that name and I didnt like them and it reminds me of them...
This was my theory and also I didn't want to hear peoples opinions Grin DH and I picked names and didn't say what they were called to anyone until they were born.
MerryChristmasToYou · 30/12/2021 15:17

It's fine. Biblical.

contrary13 · 30/12/2021 15:26

It's a great name! Classic, but not over-used - so theoretically he should be the only one in his class. And yes; Timmy as a baby/child, Tim as a teenager, and Timothy as an adult Grin

I might be biased, though... my great-great-grandfather was a Timothy, and so was my first serious boyfriend - although, he used his middle name (Gerald) because he'd always been called "Timmy" by his family and he'd grown to resent it for some 16-year-old reason.

Choux · 30/12/2021 15:28

@SirVixofVixHall

I love it. I know a lovely Tim ( adult) who is part of a really lovely family. Have never met a nasty Timothy/Tim .
Oh you must be talking about my brother and my family
Arethechildreninbedyet · 30/12/2021 15:28

Love it!

He’ll be the only one but not with an out there name. The only modern Timothy I know of is Timothee Chalamet and he goes by Timmy.

RipWheeler · 30/12/2021 15:35

ThymeTravel yes I’m afraid I was terribly upset, probably for about 4 years it hurt. Silly I suppose. The story - we didn’t tell anyone our baby name except her and her DH, I opened up to her because tragically her previous baby had died. I never said anything to her or anyone else about “taking” the name other than my DH. Our friendship did become more smile and nod, just pleasantries. We picked a different name. Our two children were in the same class at junior school together. So I saw the family every day for years. They are 15 now (different schools which was deliberate on my part) and it no longer hurts. We now love our DC’s ‘new’ name.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/12/2021 15:36

It’s a fabulous name- traditional yet cool, classic yet not overused!

LynetteScavo · 30/12/2021 15:37

Tim is a great name and goes well with out surname, so was our boys list. I just didn't feel it was quite strong enough.

wavecatcher · 30/12/2021 15:51

@ChocolateDeficitDisorder

The actor Timothee Chalamet is a rising star. He could make the name popular over the next few years.
He was great in Dune and I love the spelling this way. Feels a great way to modernise a classic name.
loislovesstewie · 30/12/2021 15:51

Oh yes! I love it. I knew a very sweet Timothy so am prejudiced in its favour.

Lifeisnteasy · 30/12/2021 15:52

No no no no
He won’t thank you for it
Very wet and ‘cutesy’ sounding
Honestly it’s on level with Percy

MoominMeggy · 30/12/2021 16:23

I'm not a fan - it sounds really wet to me.

Tootfroot · 30/12/2021 16:27

Underused classic I think. You will always get people who don't like what name you choose, but this one is a nice normal name. I know a couple of Tims, both really decent people.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/12/2021 16:30

I like it too. I was just thinking of Timothy Spall today and liking the fact he wasn't a Tim. Princess Anne's husband too and he's had a very good navel career. A fine name.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 30/12/2021 16:38

I may be wrong but I’m sure his parents are French and the spelling in the French way of spelling it.

itssquidstella · 30/12/2021 16:49

@Arethechildreninbedyet yes you're right - Timothée is the French spelling, not a 'modern twist' on Timothy!
