Hello!
I wondered what you think of the baby boy name OILIBHÉAR? (pronounced Olly-vare).
We wanted to find an Irish name. I like that it has the friendly nn “Ollie” but an unusual longer name. But keen to hear what others think ….?
Thank you! :-)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

And willy with Prince William?
Excellent thanks for the world-class wit!

I'm agreeing with another poster. No wit involved: it is just how it looks to many of us.

Snugglybuggly · 13/06/2026 23:11

Are you joking .. just spell it the normal way

You know what...this name is actually spelt OLibhéar not OILIbhéar and the Cognate which is even less Oili bear is Olibhéir...
The OP misspelled the start as OILI- insted of OLI-
I have been looking at Irish Language names (note the OP is English but she wanted to honour her Irish heritage which is a lovely thing to do and the "ordinary" way of spelling it another commenter referred to is the English Language version, the name didn't originate in England and it exists in several different Languages) and I have seen this name before so I my mind automatically corrected it to the correct spelling of Olibhéar so I think that is part of the reason I didn't see the whole Oili Bear thing but yes, if it is misspelled like that I can see where they are coming from.

I wonder what you think of Olibhéir instead which is a cognate that is really commonly used for the Irish institutions etc that carry the name.

She was English with Irish heritage so giving her child an Irish name would have been a delightful way to honour her heritage (similar to someone with French heritage giving their child the name Olivier)...by the way the correct spelling is Olibhéar not Oilibhéar and the Cognate is Olibhéir

I'm another idiot pronouncing it Oilybear I'm afraid

The OP misspelled it as Oilibhéar instead of Olibhéar so I see where you are coming from...the most common cognate is Olibhéir (and used for Irish Institutions etc) I wonder what you think of that name?

GladHazelPoster · 14/06/2026 10:37

Note to all viewing this thread...I was wrong it is indeed spelled Oilibhéar. Sorry about that. Whoops. However the cognate is Oilibhéir...which does have the oili part but might be slighty better

I think if you have a little look on the comments on the thread the absolute ignorance and Little England nature simply had to be put in its place.
I doubt many people responding to me now have.

There are plenty of names that on paper remind you of something else etc especially foreign ones. I would be happy to explain one of my points in greater detail if you think you spotted a flaw.
Have a wonderful day!

No flaws; I am not interested in "flaw spotting."

I just gave feedback for the OP who asked what people's thoughts would be if she used it for her child. If I look at that word now, I might think " oh that's right form of Oliver" but truthfully my first impression when she posted it was "Oily Bear." I seem not to have been alone in that.

No,I understand your point and now that I realise it is the correct form I see it too for a english speakers perspective, but my comments (not all of them however) where in reference to other inane comments by Little Ingerlanders...

Yes, as I said when I still thought it was spelt the other way...

Just realised this is a zombie thread from 2021

I'm currently researching Irish baby names as I'm thinking of using one and I came across this thread and saw some fairly disgusting comments...so I felt obligated to let them know that kind of attitude wasn't welcome...the comments are a couple of pages back though so I honestly wouldn't expect anyone viewing this page now to have seen them.
