Just that really.

What does everyone think of the name Elodie?

Elodie is very of the moment and I think it will date. Part of the reason that I think it will date is because El- names are so popular so it just sounds like name of the moment. Also, looking at Elodie in the charts it's on a rapid upward climb (and the general advice to avoid a dated name is to avoid a name with a pattern like that.

Names with a rise as sharp as like will usually fall back down as quickly when the trend finishes. For an example of name the other side of the trend, let's take Shannon. It entered the top 100 in the 90s for the first time, peaked, then dropped and is now considered a dated name.

The other side to this is that most names will date to some extent. Unless you go for a very classic name (and the only girls name to stay in the top hundred since 1904 is Elizabeth), an international name not in common use in the UK, or a name which is extremely rare (the caveat to that point is that rare names can still date if they fit into popular trends - Elvia had no recorded uses last year but sounds like a current name). So personally I really wouldn't worry about it. The Dark Greener website is fantastic for a quick look, and to assess if a name you like will become popular. But as you like Elodie, popularity isn't a concern for you anyway.

I like it. It's pretty but not soppy and I don't consider it difficult to pronounce at all. (Unless I was talking French, I'd say it to rhyme with melody.) Also, if you're concerned about it being popular and/or becoming dated, surely it's better to choose a name that's currently on an upward climb than already past its peak?

Magpiecomplex · 21/11/2021 17:31

I know a 20-something Elodie who dislikes it and goes by Ellie.

MerryChristmasToYou · 21/11/2021 18:02

@toastofthetown, Shannon was wildly popular for a very short time, so dates the bearer.
Its popularity was probably due to Beverley Hills 90210.

A name on a rapid upward trend will usually date badly. It might seem fresh and unusual but will at some point fall out of favour just as quickly

What is the french pronunciation? I’ve always thought it was a french name said the way the french say it. I guess my q might be what is the non french pronunciation ?!

Tal45 · 21/11/2021 18:16

I love it x

MerryChristmasToYou · 21/11/2021 18:16

The french pronunciation is Élodie (Approximately Ail-Oh-Dee, all syllables stressed the same)

Uk pronunciation is like melody without the M

alienbaby · 21/11/2021 18:18

@HeronLanyon
It's pronounced in French as it is English, just say it in a French accent but rather than the emphasis being on the first syllable like in English, in French all the syllables are given the same weighting (as with all French words)
English: EL-uh-dee
French: el-oh-di

Thebookswereherfriends · 21/11/2021 18:20

I love it. Used to look after a little girl at the nursery I worked in called Elodie and she was the sweetest little thing, so I’ve always liked it since.

HeronLanyon · 21/11/2021 18:24

merry and alien thank you ! Yes it’s more a stress and rhythm and accent difference than pronunciation although if I really let rip my final french syllable is a wonder !

MonsteraDeliciosa · 21/11/2021 21:15

Sounds awful when not said in a French accent.

Also, elodea is pond weed.

Lalliella · 22/11/2021 00:23
