Marigold

I've heard of a Marigold that goes by Goldie and thought it was really nice. What are your thoughts on Marigold with the nickname Mary?

I certainly think it sounds current and if you are a nature name lover then it has an appeal.
I wouldn't go with Mary as a nn though. Mary is one of my favourite names and doesn't need help.
Mari as in the Welsh name would work much better.

Lemonsyellow · 09/11/2021 08:51

Yes, I like it rather a lot. Churchill’s daughter, Downton, etc. Rather posh vibes from that time.

TataMamma · 09/11/2021 09:11

I think of cleaning toilets.
If it's Mari you want, then just called her that. It's actually the Welsh version of Marie, although can be short for any number of other things.

TataMamma · 09/11/2021 09:13

@raintropics

I do really like Marisol. Never heard of the Rubber gloves so don't think that would be a problem where I am.

I like uncommon names but don't want to use one that comes off as try hard or weird. Thanks you for your opinions, I appreciate them! Smile

Ask anyone over a certain age, or at least any woman, and there'll defo think of the clothes.
ILoveShula · 09/11/2021 09:31

Marisol sounds like Anusoil.

ILoveShula · 09/11/2021 09:45

Anusol, sorry

Skyla2005 · 09/11/2021 12:10

Gloves

toastofthetown · 09/11/2021 13:02

I don't think the Marigold is a brand of gloves is a problem, nor is the Marisol sounds like Anusol. Ellie sounds like smelly. Felix is a brand of cat food. Lottie sounds like grotty. William has 'willy' in it. Lucas rhymes with mucus. Loony Luna. These are all top hundred names and I could go on. Most names have something about them that sounds like something else and unless the name is such that it is completely tied to a horrible person/reference/item (e.g. Adolf) I think it's a non-issue. Something to be aware of, but I wouldn't avoid a name because of it.

CaffiSaliMali · 09/11/2021 13:17

I think Mari works better than Mary as a nickname for Marigold as the sound is contained within the name. Mari is one of several Welsh versions of Mary.

Both Mari and Mary work as names in their own right too.

If you like Marisol then Marisa and Marissa are both nice too.

Lucyinthesky07 · 09/11/2021 14:23

I remember reading a story when I was little about a little girl called Marigold who didn't want to go to school. I always think of that when I read it but never actually met one in real life.

I really like Mariella.

nordicnorth · 09/11/2021 14:46

I've followed a blogger for a long time with a Marigold known as Goldie. She's a quirky American arty type and it fits having quirky kids names. I think in the non 'quirky blogger' world it is a bit silly.

Synchrony · 09/11/2021 14:55

I think of Downton Abbey. I really like Goldie (actually much prefer it to Marigold). I don't think Mary works as a nn because Mary doesn't sound like the first syllable of Marigold, which is like "marry".

I don't think of the rubber gloves as I always think of them as a plural. Similarly I don't think of jeans the clothes when I hear Jean the name.

VenusClapTrap · 09/11/2021 21:32

Marigold and Marisol are two of my absolute favourite names, and if I was to have another girl they would be high up on my list. I also love Marguerite and Marjolaine, to float another couple of Mar names.

AnyaMoondial · 09/11/2021 21:45

I really like it but find the downtown abbey connection a bit too much.

Camii · 09/11/2021 21:56

@BulldogDrummondBass beat me to it.
Love the name because of the Churchill connection.
Also love the name Mirabelle which has a sim feel.

MeatyRvita · 09/11/2021 22:58

Absolutely adore the name Marigold and if I had a DD tomorrow it would 100% be the name I would choose (It’s been top of my name list since I was pregnant in 2017 but we had a DS so I didn’t get to use it but maybe in the future!)
Not fan of the shortening Mary or Mari but LOVE Goldie.

Skeumorph · 09/11/2021 23:04

Just no. This is the problem with the tail end of trends! All the good ones go first. We’re currently at the point where Lily and Poppy are now dull and overused, so we’re down to the likes of Violet (with everyone trying very hard to ignore that Vi is a fag-stained bingo pro) and now Marigold. Eek. The Patricia/Susan/Barbara era can’t actually come quick enough now 😬

SE13Mummy · 09/11/2021 23:40

I think Mary is a lovely name but it's not the obvious shortening for Marigold. The name Marigold makes me think of the book, Marigold in Godmother's House and for that reason, I love it. It's a book I used to read when staying at my grandparents' and always looked forward to being able to read it when we visited. Neither of my DDs is called Marigold although my DM regularly maintains it would have been the perfect name for the one of them whose hair is apparently marigold colour.

Marigold
hagsrus0 · 09/11/2021 23:43

Loved "Marigold in Godmother's House" by the author of Milly Molly Mandy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/11/2021 01:47

I just don't think Marigold has a very nice sound - and it unfortunately reminds me of the slang for rubber washing up gloves as much as the flower Smile.

Mary is a nice classic, Marisol is pretty too (although I might assume some Spanish links since you rarely hear it in the UK). I also love the stylish Marianne and Mariana.

If you want to go the less common floral route then I think Jessamine, Dahlia etc are nicer.

Scarby9 · 10/11/2021 02:27

We had two fish from the fair called Goldie and Marigold.
Marigold has all the ingredients of a lovely name but, sadly, for me, it is taineted by the fish and the rubber gloves.

Sidneysussex · 10/11/2021 20:51

Marigold traditionally in the language of flowers means grief. Absolutely not a name I would touch!

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/11/2021 23:11

They called her Marigold and hoped she would...

NO

Marianne, Marina, Miriam, Maria..

Marisol sounds like a cleaning product or a cure for piles

jackstini · 11/11/2021 23:39

I do know a Mari and it's a lovely name on its own

Joystir59 · 11/11/2021 23:49

As in gloves? Great for washing up. Also love marigold flowers. Wouldn't call a female human child Marigold though. Don't you like children much OP?
