Stuck between these two, which would you choose and why?

Fiona, because Sophie is now too common and a bit boring.

BeautifulTulips · 03/11/2021 22:16

Sophie, it's such a pretty name

Bananarama21 · 03/11/2021 22:18

Sophie is a timeless name I'm biased as it's 8 year old daughters name

Courtier · 03/11/2021 22:55

Sophie, it might be common but it's beautiful. Fiona is a bit less attractive to me. Plus it reminds me of Shrek.

Ellmau · 03/11/2021 23:09

Sophie is classic. Fiona is pleasant but dated.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 03/11/2021 23:15

I love Fiona and my 17 year old daughter is called Fiona and also my friend’s 9 year old is called Fiona too.

AlexaShutUp · 03/11/2021 23:21

Sophie is a beautiful name but very common.

Fiona is much less common but there is a reason for that...it just isn't as nice.

So it boils down to personal preference, really. Do you care more about the name itself or about how common it is? For me, originality wasn't a big factor, I wasn't looking for a unique name. We chose a classic name that has actually turned out to be not very common in dd's generation, but I wouldn't have minded in the slightest if it was. Other people feel that having an unusual name is really important. Fair enough, their choice.

Personally, I'd pick Sophie by a country mile.

Classica · 03/11/2021 23:28

I've never met an interesting Sophie. And have never understood the popularity of the name. Such a soft shapeless sound.

AosSi · 03/11/2021 23:28

Fiona.

Sophie is just like Emily - an ok name but rather wishy washy and nothing special.

Classica · 03/11/2021 23:29

Ugh, yeah Emily too. Both so wishy washy.

AlexaShutUp · 03/11/2021 23:32

I love the name Emily too!Grin

Actually prefer the sound of Sophie, but it really is so ubiquitous that I’m voting Fiona for popularity reasons. I love that -ona suffix though, it’s just not my favourite name with it.

AdaColeman · 04/11/2021 01:02

Fiona, it’s a very pretty name, and much more unusual than the extremely popular Sophie.

Enough4me · 04/11/2021 01:35

Sophie, but on a similar theme I think Phobe is more unusual and can have the nn. Phi if you liked Phi/Fi as a nn for Sophie / Fiona.

Skeumorph · 04/11/2021 11:24

Sorry but I really dislike Fiona - it's boring and harsh.

Some names - there's a reason there's not more of them!

Sophie is beautiful, and actually - it's Sophia/Sofia which is the common one, for some reason.

Tons of Sophias here - very few Sophies.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 04/11/2021 11:28

Some names - there's a reason there's not more of them!

Well, it's because they fall out of fashion. Jennifer used to be ubiquitous and now it's much rarer. Sophie hasn't always been an uber-popular name. Fiona once was.

Fashions.

Cindie943811A · 04/11/2021 12:38

Now I’ve always quite liked the name Fiona BUT I have come across no fewer than 5 Fionas in my life who hated their names and used another!
Funnily enough 2 called themselves Kim!

SallyWD · 04/11/2021 13:25

Fiona is much nicer. I know hundreds of Sophies and I don't find it a particularly interesting name for a girl. Fiona is gorgeous. Strong yet pretty.
