Sophie or Fiona?

Stuck between these two, which would you choose and why?

Fiona. I'd say it's due a comeback. There were so many Fionas about when I was a kid in the 1970s. It seems fresh now. Sophie by contrast, a bit tired.

They're both good but Fiona has my vote.

Fiona. Definitely. It was never super popular (well, in England, possibly was in Scotland), I can think of 2 in my school of 1,000 in the 80s, so it’s not dated. Fresh and a real name with real roots.

I’d love to meet a baby Fiona!

Sophie! In 15 years teaching I only taught one, and only know of 2 others. Fiona- taught one, but I think it’s not as pretty as Sophie

Both are lovely. I think I'd go for Fiona for the Celtic vibe. Sophie is a bit girly - I prefer Sophia, which is more classical (means wisdom).

I'd wouldn't pick it however, because I wouldn't be able to bear the inevitable shortenings of Fi and worse, FiFi. Makes me think of a pretentious mother announcing her daughter's pony deliberately loudly in the playground.

Fiona pretty name due a comeback. Sophie is a lovely name but now seems a bit boring as there are so many.

Fiona definitely fewer about - Dd2 is most perturbed that having been the only one in the school there are now 3 😂🤣

Am old enough to have known more than a few Fionas but can count the nice ones on the thumbs of one hand.

Sophie - Fiona is a very common name from the 60s/70s up here, on par with Karen, Sharon, Lesley, that kind of name.

I have a Sophie so I’ll say that name lol

Several Sophias I know are known as Fia or FiFi.

Of the fabulous Fionas I know, they are only called Fi by a couple of people, not generally,

Fiona makes me think of ogres, sorry. It’s not at all pretty to me.

Another one named Fiona here :) I have only ever come across one or two other people with the same name. I have also taught for many years and cannot recall ever coming across any, so if you are looking for uncommon go for it.
