Due in 4 weeks and don't know what the sex is. Really struggling with boys names. I love Alex/Alexander but worry it's too basic/boring. Other names I like but DH isn't that keen on are

Flynn
Ezra

I feel like I've looked at every single name and none of them are working. Any ideas please? Do you think Alex is boring or isit just a good name?

I did like Ralph but ive gone off that now.
Thanks

Personally I do find Alex a little dull as I know lots of girls and boys with this name.

I like Flynn or how about Quinn.

sageandbasil · 02/11/2021 12:01

@Blubells that's my worry. Ive loved it forever but now I'm just thinking it's not that imaginative. I love Quinn but it dosent go with our surname unfortunately

I love Alexander, personally. I would go with that, as I don't find it boring at all.

I would prefer Finn or Fionn to Flynn though.

Cominghome1230 · 02/11/2021 12:19

I love the name Alex. ( Not so keen on Alexander though) we would have named our daughter it if she was a boy.
My friend has since had a little boy and called him Alex so we can't use it this time.
But we have decided on Flynn instead, but out of the two I would go with Alex

TheSpiral · 02/11/2021 12:22

I think Alexander is an excellent name. Love it. It is true that there are quite a few around though.
I like Ezra as well.
Sebastian? Dylan?

SirChenjins · 02/11/2021 12:24

I love Alexander - it’s not boring at all. Not so keen on Flynn or Ezra, they’re just a bit meh. Ralph is a really boring 70s name - all the Ralphs I knew from that time were dull as dishwater!

sageandbasil · 02/11/2021 12:30

@Cominghome1230 we have similar tastes!

I'm not a fan of Finn. DH dosent like Sebastian and I'm from wales where every other child's called Dylan. I don't usually like popular names Alex is the only one I like which is strange for me.

I prefer Alex to Alexander but DH would want Alexander on BC.

Alexander has dropped in the charts which I was shocked and happy about but it does still seem very popular but not so much on children anymore?

I also love Aled which my husband has again said no too 🙄

How about Magnus? It’s all time favourite boys name which my horrible DH vetoed - but I am determined I will name something Magnus before I leave this world Grin

ParmigianoReggiano · 02/11/2021 12:33

I love Alex / Alexander - not boring at all

Sexnotgender · 02/11/2021 12:36

Love Alexander, it’s a classic for a reason.

Ezra is dull and I know bloody loads of them.

KaptainKaveman · 02/11/2021 12:37

I like Alex. I also like Dominic.

FazedNotPhased · 02/11/2021 12:38

Taliesin if you're Welsh? I love that name!

Zach? Jonah? Zeke?

PeskyRooks · 02/11/2021 12:47

Dexter?

violetanemone · 02/11/2021 12:53

I actually think Ezra is quite mainstream these days. It seems really popular and to me just sounds like parents trying too hard to be interesting. There's a fine line.

Nothing wrong with Alex, and I love Flynn, but if your partner doesn't love it then why not go with Alex?

bloominglovelyorange · 02/11/2021 12:59

I love Alex and don't find boring

How about Alistair

chocolatenutcase · 02/11/2021 13:00

@SirChenjins my DS is Magnus and I love it. Such a strong name and I've never met another one locally.
@sageandbasil My DH is Alexander. Called Alex by most friends but Zander by his mum and Sandy by another group of friends.

jennytogether · 02/11/2021 13:03

I think Alex and Alexander are great. The other names are a bit fashionable, but Alexander is timeless.

Winecheesesleep · 02/11/2021 13:04

I have an Alex (full name Alexander). Although it's obviously a popular name he's always been the only Alex in his class/activity group. If you love it I wouldn't worry about it being too popular. He told us the other day he loved his name and it was perfect for him Grin

It really is a brilliant name, isn't it? Smile I know of a few here in Edinburgh but maybe less common elsewhere in the UK?

Elisemum · 02/11/2021 13:38

Alexander/Alex is a lovely name for a boy and it’s not boring. It’s normal and classy. Why do people on these forums want every baby to be named some made-up horrific names? What about normal names like Alex, Emma, Sam, laura, Lauren, Matthew and hundreds of other normal names? I feels like naming babies is some kind of a race to see who will give the most made up name ever

Blubells · 02/11/2021 14:17

Why do people on these forums want every baby to be named some made-up horrific names?

Why is the alternative to a popular name (for both males and females) like Alex necessarily some 'made up horrific name' Confused

Blubells · 02/11/2021 14:19

There are lots and lots of classic normal names outside the top 100 that are neither made up or horrific. Magnus is one - it's a lovely classic name that's easy to say and spell. There are loads more like that.

What's popular in one area of the UK might not be popular in another...or it might be popular for one or two years and then disappear (or vice versa). It's impossible to say what's popular really - and even really popular names might only mean that one child in the class has that name.

I remember my friend and her DP picked a really unusual name for their DC1 which wasn't even from their culture...only for their DC to go to our small local school with a child from that culture with the same name!
