My great aunt was Tay-uh but that’s with a European heritage.

My grandma, same birth country, had Theadora as a middle name, pronounced Taya-dora.

I’d say Tay-uh out of habit if I’m honest

Tuliptulip · 30/10/2021 08:32

Thee-ah, like Dorothea

Thecatisboss · 30/10/2021 08:44

My Gran was German whose name was Dorothea and she pronounced it with a tea sound as no th in German. I'd normally prounce it with the th sound.

minatrina · 30/10/2021 08:46

@PricklesTheHedgehog

I've only known one Thea and her name was pronounced Tay-a.
Same here

The only one I knew as a child was French, so Tay-a. But it's since become popular so most of the young ones I know are Thee-a.

I really only like the French pronunciation though!

Fear

Tay-ah is the French pronunciation (probably other regions too). Thee-ah is the Greek and most common British pronunciation. It can also be short for Dorothea, Althea, Dorothea which would all likely be the Thee-ah pronunciation too.

purplemunkey · 30/10/2021 13:44

Meant Dorothea, Althea or Theodora

Onlinedilema · 30/10/2021 14:14

Thee ah

Blubells · 30/10/2021 21:07

Te-ah

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/10/2021 21:14

Thea is nearly always "Thee -ah" in the UK imo.

I haven't heard "Tee -ah", I thought that was spelt Tia.

"Tay -ah" sounds lovely but I'd expect it to be either spelt Taya or with an accent over the E in Thea. If you want that pronunciation you might like the very similar but rarer Ancient Greek Theia, usually pronounced "Thay-ah".

Sugarbellaella · 30/10/2021 21:18

Tay-ah

Kitkat151 · 30/10/2021 21:31

I live in NW....child in my GC class pronounces it thaya

Allium16 · 01/11/2021 04:02

I have an Auntie Tey-a but all other Theas I know are Thee-a, with a soft "th" as in Seth, rather than the.

If that makes any sense.

Allium16 · 01/11/2021 04:03

^Auntie Tay-a

Blurryeyedbeast · 01/11/2021 04:07

Tay-Ah. (West Yorkshire, if it makes a difference).

sleepinglionsroar · 01/11/2021 05:17

Th ee a

To be like Freya it would need a different spelling I feel.

ilovemykids5 · 01/11/2021 09:46

Well on this basis it seems we are both right in a way.. I don't think I will use it now as it looks like she will be asked how its pronounced all the time. Thank you
