Your husband is correct. No offence but I would only expect chavs to be pronouncing it wrong.

emmathedilemma · 29/10/2021 20:55

Th-ee-a
As in thee to rhyme with flea

I'd also expect arseholes to correct people with an accent....
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2021 21:08

Pronounce it how ever you like, think of Hyacinth Bucket,
or
Adam Cockburn.

feelingsicknow · 29/10/2021 21:15

I always pronounced it Thee-ah but went to a birthday party of a little girl in my son's nursery class called Thea, and her mum was pronouncing it 'Tay-ah'. But they are of Indian heritage and her English wasn't great, so I am still none the wiser. I've started pronouncing it like the mum, just in case.

LynetteScavo · 29/10/2021 21:25

Thee-ah

Although when DS2 was a toddler he said Fee-ah (like fear) which is why DD isn't called Thea.

It's a lovely name, and I'm sure in other countries it's pronounced differently.

TatianaBis · 29/10/2021 21:26

Thee a or Thay a.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 21:29

Thee-uh with my English hat on. Tay-ah with my German hat on. I need to buy actual hats

Fivebeanchilli · 29/10/2021 21:30

Like the beginning of theatre.
I do know one pronounced Tay - a but she's Danish.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 29/10/2021 21:30

We know an 11 year old Thea - pronounced Tay-a

RestingStitchFace · 29/10/2021 21:31

I had a classmate called Thea years ago. She pronounced it Tey-A. (Universally mispronounced by everyone else though.)

TatianaBis · 29/10/2021 21:34

😂

Nope. Both are equally ‘correct’.

In the U.K. it’s generally pronounced Thee a or Thay a. In Greece it’s Thaya. In France it’s Taya.

LittleBearPad · 29/10/2021 21:34

In the UK Thee-a

RacketeerRalph · 29/10/2021 21:54

Th ee a.

I know like 5 of them!

Lovesicecreams · 29/10/2021 21:55

Thee (rhymes with me) - uh

Lynne1Cat · 29/10/2021 21:57

I'd say Thee-a

PrivateParty · 29/10/2021 22:07

Thee ah

Lochroy · 29/10/2021 22:22

Thee-a? Really? As in the same as the? Old fashioned way of saying you? I'm surprised it's so popular. I would have thought the 'The' part of 'Thea' sounded like a phonic 'th'.

TatianaBis · 29/10/2021 22:24

Thea as thatch not as in thee

Helenluvsrob · 29/10/2021 22:25

In uk thee a

Continental Europe Tay a or tee a

It’s like eeeve lin or ev lin or even ever lin For Evelyn . Convention and people will use the one you use.

Anoisagusaris · 29/10/2021 22:29

Tea-ah as I’m Irish and often don’t pronounce my THs correctly 😆

Couldn’t consider loads of names for my babies as a result eg I pronounce Matthew as Matchew unless I make a conscious effort to pronounce the th.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 22:32

I'd say Thea with an unvoiced th like in teeth, rather than the voiced th in thee but there isn't a way to show that in normal letters! Like the first syllable of theatre.

How, out of interest, might a non-chav pronounce Theodora?
lottiegarbanzo · 29/10/2021 23:55

Same as you. Tia (Spanish for aunt) is a different name.

lottiegarbanzo · 30/10/2021 08:19

As if short for Theodora but with an 'a' at the end.
