@AuntDympna you have another of the Irish names I love.

pilates · 26/10/2021 17:32

Awful

Monsterpumpkins · 26/10/2021 17:32

Wow what a charmer you are Marelle....

stingofthebutterfly · 26/10/2021 17:39

Lower class around here.

Don't particularly hate it though.

TrussOnABus · 26/10/2021 17:41

@Marelle

It’s a bit chavvy and lower class. And if it’s a chavvy footballer’s name that’s even worse. Who names their child after a footballer?! Probably the same people who buy those “Live, Laugh, Love” signs.

What a horrid thing to say! I hope you're nicer in real life

TrussOnABus · 26/10/2021 17:42

I think its nice for a baby/child but I didn't think it carries too well into adulthood if I'm honest OP

shchild · 26/10/2021 17:50

I cannot believe in this day and age people make connections about a baby's name with the socioeconomic grouping of their parents. Classless society eh!

daisypond · 26/10/2021 17:58

@shchild

I cannot believe in this day and age people make connections about a baby's name with the socioeconomic grouping of their parents. Classless society eh!
Of course they do. It’s disingenuous to suggest they don’t.
TertiusLydgate · 26/10/2021 18:04

Of course people connect name with socioeconomic groups! It’s just a fact of life.

Hellocatshome · 26/10/2021 18:08

Who said we were a classless society?

WomBat55 · 26/10/2021 18:09

I have a family member Seamus that goes by Shay. I like it. And it travels well - he lives overseas and it’s an easy name for most to pronounce

TrussOnABus · 26/10/2021 18:41

It says an awful lot about your intelligence and character if you can make a judgement on someone's social class purely from a bunch of letters they were assigned at birth...

Buttons294749 · 26/10/2021 18:43

I know a shay, she is lovely!
It's nice but plain.

switswoo81 · 26/10/2021 18:50

I'm in Ireland and it's the opposite of "chavy" Work in a small wealthy rural school with 2 Shays.

geesearego · 26/10/2021 18:54

The UK isn't a classless society and names from Ireland are frequently called chavy on this site.

tilder · 26/10/2021 18:55

@Rosesareyellow

Shae. Prostitute on GOT. But it is a nice name.
This was my thought too.

It's a nice name though.

geesearego · 26/10/2021 18:55

Or described as being on the "naughty list" at school.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/10/2021 19:00

I assumed you meant Che, as in Guevara, that revolutionary bloke - and spelled it wrongly..

Cornettoninja · 26/10/2021 19:02

I get the inexplicable urge to add ‘amore’ after saying shay…

Like others I don’t really have a good reason for not really liking it I just don’t. But the reverse of that is if you’re really drawn to it that’s good enough reason in itself.

Libertaire · 26/10/2021 19:03

I would definitely go with Seamus.

The UK isn't a classless society and names from Ireland are frequently called chavy on this site.

Only when they are inappropriately anglicised and/ or mis-spelled. Proper traditional Irish names, correctly spelled, are not ‘chavy’ at all.

FanGirlX · 26/10/2021 19:17

@MirandaBlu

Nothing wrong with it, although it is anglicised. The original Irish name is Séaghdha.
How is that pronounced please?
AuntDympna · 26/10/2021 19:28

Séaghdha is pronounced Shay.

Che Guevara was part Irish, but the name Che is Spanish iirc.

Dympna is lovely isn't it @ANameChangeAgain ?

Badoukas · 26/10/2021 19:29

I really love it. I also think Sean should make a comeback.

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2021 19:36

I really like Shay.

I'd put Seamus on the birth certificate though.

RightOnTheEdge · 26/10/2021 19:38

Shay is nice OP. I like the sound of it.

So many vile snobs on here! Shock
