I like it.
I know a shay and he's a gorgeous wee bhoy 💚💚

TerribleCustomerCervix · 26/10/2021 16:42

I like it.

Wouldn’t use it as a full name as it’s very much a nickname for Séamus to me, but it’s not bloody chavvy! It’s the equivalent of Jim or Frank to me- a grandad nickname.

shchild · 26/10/2021 16:43

My nearly 21 year old son is Shay, named after Newcastle United's Mr Given. Loved the name then, and love it now.
Although people do tend to mishear and call him Shane.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 26/10/2021 16:45

Sorry op but round here its very chavvy. Same kind of name as kai, lewis, connor etc

IamMaz · 26/10/2021 16:46

No - I don't like it at all.

Bert2e · 26/10/2021 16:55

NO! Let's just say he spends lots of time in internal exclusion at school.

HazelandChacha · 26/10/2021 16:58

800 words.

There were a lot of Shay’s (girls) a few months after 800 words was shown on the BBC.

Marelle · 26/10/2021 16:58

It’s a bit chavvy and lower class. And if it’s a chavvy footballer’s name that’s even worse. Who names their child after a footballer?! Probably the same people who buy those “Live, Laugh, Love” signs.

shchild · 26/10/2021 17:04

I did! Please enlighten me how you arrived at your conclusion.
ImAbsolutelyTwatted · 26/10/2021 17:05

I know a Shay (almost 12) and he really suits his name. He's such a lovely kid so for me I love it.

Enough4me · 26/10/2021 17:07

If you look up to footballers and think Kai is a regular name, go for it.

😂😂😂😂
Polecat03 · 26/10/2021 17:10

Funny how regional the 'chavvy' name thing is. Here I have only heard of one Shea, and it's spelled exactly like that, as in Shea butter. For a girl. I thought it was lovely and unusual and soft! Grin

ANameChangeAgain · 26/10/2021 17:13

Wow, @Marelle, is that you Katie Hopkins? I really like Irish names and hate the stuck up reactions people still have to them. I would go for the full name though and shorten it as a nickname.

AuntDympna · 26/10/2021 17:13

Probably popular among Irish diaspora.

Ó Corráin and Maguire "Irish Names" says:
"Ségdae: Séaghdha, Sé. This name may mean "hawklike, fine, goodly". A relatively rare early name from which derives the modern surname Ó Séaghdha (Shea). It could be anglicised Shay."

Muttly · 26/10/2021 17:16

Yes common enough as a NN for Seamus in Ireland. I really like it.

maddy68 · 26/10/2021 17:17

No. But because I taught a horrid kid called that no logical reason (I do think it's a bit chavy too if I'm totally honest but again I could be associating ...)

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 26/10/2021 17:19

@TatianaBis Grin

VashtaNerada · 26/10/2021 17:20

Makes me think of Shae in GOT. So… no.

Maassi · 26/10/2021 17:20

Shay is such a chavvy name.
Shae is a prostitutes name in Game of Thrones

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/10/2021 17:21

I don't mind it as a nickname for Séamus. All the ones I know are in their 50s at least, but I know a few baby Séamuses, and I expect they will be Shay when they grow up.

WineAway · 26/10/2021 17:23

Interesting chavvy common & lower class

Would you say that about Mohammed?

bigbeautwoman · 26/10/2021 17:24

Seamus
O’Shea

MirandaBlu · 26/10/2021 17:27

Nothing wrong with it, although it is anglicised. The original Irish name is Séaghdha.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/10/2021 17:29

By the way I don't think Shay (for Séamus) is common. Shay on its own might be questionable.
