Can't decide..... should I call him Ted but then Teddy as a nickname whilst he's little or Teddy and then Ted is his nickname??

Teddy is cute for about 5 mins. Go with Ted - he'll Thankyou when he's older

DirtyDancing · 25/10/2021 17:41

Defo Ted

ofwarren · 25/10/2021 17:46

Edward then you can call his Ted or Teddy.

HoldingTheDoor · 25/10/2021 17:47

Ted. Teddy is incredibly twee.

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2021 17:48

They are both diminutives of longer names. Teddy is ridiculously twee. Go for one of the original names, he'll be grateful for something more dignified when he's older.

toastofthetown · 25/10/2021 17:51

Of the two I prefer Ted as full name, though in the England and Wales stats Teddy is eight times more popular than Ted (and just two spots below Edward). While personally I’m not a fan of -ie/-y nicknames as full names, they are hugely popular at the moment so I don’t think the fear that they won’t grow into adulthood is founded. There are hundreds of thousands of boys with these names.

HoldingTheDoor · 25/10/2021 17:58

It isn't the ie thing that makes it sound childish to me. It's more the fact that it's also the name of a child's toy.

HoldingTheDoor · 25/10/2021 17:58

Ie/y thing sorry.

ducksalive · 25/10/2021 18:02

I would go with Theodore or Edward.
Then you can start with Teddy which is cute when they are baby and they can move to Ted for school when they want to be more grown up.
I know a dc who has done this and likes their name 😉

Pixilicious · 25/10/2021 18:03

Edward

muddyford · 25/10/2021 18:06

Edward or Edmund.

Athomewiththehales89 · 25/10/2021 18:09

We have a Ted/ Teddy, he gets both but his full name is Edward which we thought would be nice for when he’s older

thewhatsit · 25/10/2021 18:10

Ideally Edward or Theodore.

But if it has to be Ted or Teddy, definitely Ted.

Duchess379 · 25/10/2021 18:14

I love both tbh 💕😉

BeKindBeYou · 25/10/2021 18:17

Ted! I love it :)

Letsplough · 25/10/2021 18:21

I have a Teddy, he is called Ted & Teddy by his friends & family. Most names get shortened or lengthened.

Funnyfive · 25/10/2021 18:22

My son has a friend who is Edward but was Ted/Teddy until he hit the teens, now he is most definitely Ed and gets very cross if you call him Ted!

So I’d go with Edward and give the child the choice to change.

CorvusPurpureus · 25/10/2021 18:38

I have a late teens Edmund who variously answers to Ned or Mundo (in the family - there's also an Edward nn Ed in his extended family so this differentiates between them), Ed (default for most people/casual acquaintances), Eddie (one group of school friends), Teddy (online gamers; his username includes this), & Ted (his best mate - he also has a nickname for the mate that just the two of them use - it's a bromance thing.)

He actually prefers his full name & introduces himself by it, although he's happy with any of his nicknames.

I'd definitely go with Edward/Edmund/Theodore. It's nice to have the options, & also to have a formal, grown up name. On their own, I'd say Teddy is a bit childish & Ted a bit middle aged TV anchorman, although both perfectly nice diminutives of a more 'classic' name.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 25/10/2021 18:44

Another vote for Ted or if you want a longer name Edward/Theodore/Edmund. So many variations for him to use.

Purplebear37 · 25/10/2021 18:46

Have an older Theodore here, who goes by Teddy at school (his choice, he was almost 5 and a half starting school) and I call him Ted or Teddy interchangeably. He's always known who I'm talking to and he likes his name. Im in Scotland where its not so common, certainly not around here. The name gets a hard time on here, but I don't like most of the names put forward on most threads. Edmund would be a huge no in this area, for example.

AnyaMoondial · 25/10/2021 19:38

Ted nn Teddy

Rockmehardplace · 25/10/2021 23:53

Edward.

Blubells · 26/10/2021 09:18

Edward/Theodore/Edmund are all lovely names.

The nicknames Ed/Eddie/Ted/Teddie/Ned/Neddie are cute whilst young or used within the family or close friends.

daisypond · 26/10/2021 10:06

Call him Edward or Theodore or some such.
Don’t call him either Ted or Teddy.

Notimetolive · 26/10/2021 10:15

Imagine him stood at the alter about to be married………..
Do you Ted… sounds much, much better than do you Teddy…..
