We had our baby boy 2 weeks ago and he still hasn't got a name. I was hoping the NOS dataset being released today may help us just to see if the names in our shortlist were going up or down in popularity but I can only find the press release. Will the excel table be uploaded today or have I delayed for 2 weeks for absolutely no reason?!
Thanks

Oh sorry that’s just the girls.

Phobicmum · 18/10/2021 10:09

Am I being thick? It is just showing me the 2019 edition which I already downloaded. I could possibly be missing something completely obvious in my sleep deprived state!

I clicked on the two links above, and both are 2020.

TataMamma · 18/10/2021 10:52

Random fact, the 2020 figures actually include births up to April 2021 - because people were registering late due to Covid, they thought that would be a rough and ready way of making them more reliable!

Phobicmum · 18/10/2021 11:04

The girls link worked but the other link just came up with this. Can anyone post the direct link to the spreadsheet?

Ah interesting that it is until April! No wonder they took so long!

This morning I got sucked into the black hole of the entire list of all names, rating every single boys' one. Didn't even know the new version was coming today, so now I guess I'll just have to do it again! Hahahah (slow work day)

@WyncyG but that says 2019 doesn't it?

bloominglovelyorange · 18/10/2021 11:12

Where's the 2020 it's so confusing

Not surprised at all that Ivy has joined the top ten . I was very surprised to see Rosie replace Freya in the top 10, though. Freya feels tired to me, so I didn't expect that so continue rising. But looking at the actual numbers there was actually one more baby Rosie in 2019 than 2020. Counting up the top ten there were over 2000 fewer girls given names in the top ten than in 2019 (25,121 vs 27,830), continuing the trend of fewer people using the most popular names.

I was surprised that Archie jumped up for boys. Online I see people wanting to avoid names used by a public figure and (like with Freya) Archie feels a bit tired to me. But then I'm totally sick of Archie/Tommy/Bobby/Reggie ad nauseam. Jack is now threatening to fall out of the top ten, which would be huge. It had 17 consecutive years on top at one point. More stark drop in difference between boys named top ten names - 35,764 vs 39,117.

The rise of Milo and Otis don't surprise me: the O sound trend is still strong. Maeve also unsurprising. I hear it EVERYWHERE online and have for a while so not surprised thats translated to widespread popularity.
First impressions at top ten, will keep looking through today. It's like my Christmas!

I can't remember the username, but whoever it was who has been warning people off the name Roman for the last year or so, as they predicted it would increase hugely in popularity, that was an amazing call. Roman is up 31 places on last year, which is a huge rise, to the point where it's pretty much unheard of!

bloominglovelyorange · 18/10/2021 11:29

@IVflytrap
Yes , me and others suspected Roman would boom. It's everywhere. To jump up 31 places when the name was already charting high in 2019 is totally crazy jump. Like you say, almost unheard of.
My baby daughter is Rowan. I would never have picked it if I'd realised but nevermind.

toastofthetown · 18/10/2021 11:35

Just checked and all of my top name choices have either dropped or stagnated. I thought Hector might have risen in the charts but it seems to have settled where it is.

Phobicmum · 18/10/2021 11:37

Thanks so much to you all! Our baby is one step closer to having a name :)

@IVflytrap @bloominglovelyorange I knew Roman would be up but also, 31 places overnight! Wow! Arabella is about the same on the girls name. Both meteoric rises but not wholly unsurprising.

The only person I know in real life who chose Roman is a secondary school teacher and I think she picked it to be unusual (I know teachers often say so many names are ruined for them). I guess it just won’t filter through to high school age children for a good 8+ years.

CaffiSaliMali · 18/10/2021 12:48

Maeve rose 124 places this year. If you combine 2020 and 2019 it has risen 413 places, which is a massive change.

Lyra also rose 58 places and is now in the top 100.

Londoner5s · 18/10/2021 15:01

Interesting that the top 5 girl's names all end with an "A", there's a definite style at the moment that the most popular names are generally adhering to. Surely Olivia and Oliver must stop being so popular soon, Olivia has been the top name for 10 years!

CaffiSaliMali · 18/10/2021 15:23

All the Olivia's I know are in their 30s. I don't know anyone from school or Uni who named their daughters that.

All the Oliver's I know are in their 30s too although someone from school named their son Oliver a couple of years ago.

The trend amongst people I know with babies is very much Henry/Harry or a name ending in o like Jago, Leo and Arlo.

Here's a helpful breakdown - put into a user-friendly guide.
Hope it helps

I do know a few little Olivers, maybe 1 more than the little Georges, Thomases and Alexanders I know so I don’t find it that surprising however Olivia I don’t see in real life - it’s a beautiful name but I just don’t know any that aren’t adults. I hear a lot of Evie / Isabella variations.
