For a boy (of course).

Looking for a biblical/saint name.

What are your thoughts?

It's lovely! I hope you use it

Rainbowqueeen · 17/10/2021 01:47

I really like it

Eileen101 · 17/10/2021 01:48

Cute, I think. It's quite out there though and some people might think you've lost the plot,

That sort of vibe suits us as a family Grin we are very much "lost the plot" people!

To me it's a bit "heavy", it's got a lot of deep meaning . Moses in the Bible was such an important figure, wrote the Torah, led the Israelites out of Egypt across the Red Sea, received the Ten Commandments. A big character ! Giving this name to your son would saddle him with something he'd need to live up to. He'd need a strong personality to carry it off, imho.

Do you think? I always think if Moses in the bible as very relatable. I adore him! Especially when he basically asked God to choose someone else to lead the people, because he was essentially too nervous and didn't think he was good enough. I have always thought that was lovely. So real. To me, biblical Moses is a symbol of how someone very ordinary can do great things if they just rely on and trust God. To me the name symbolises pure faith in God, rather than doing great things. But it's interesting to hear the opinions od others on the name, as I'd hate for everyone to smirk and think "That child is so NOT a Moses!"

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I love the name, but it's got such a huge back story that a child / man would need a big strong persona to live up to it. I can't help thinking of a quiet, shy fellow with glasses, going off to his job as an accountant , and his name is Moses . It just wouldn't be a good fit !

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/10/2021 02:44

I'm surprised it's not popular.

Allthingspeaches · 17/10/2021 02:48

@Namechangedforthethousandthtim that's how I see him too. I love the name.

Evesgarden · 17/10/2021 02:52

I've taught a little Moses in the past. I knew it was a biblical name but never had a expectation for him to live up to great responsibilities. Its strong name like Joseph that will suit him all the way in to adulthood.

I mean a few thousand kids are called Messiah in the US...

elfran · 17/10/2021 07:19

It's so lovely. I'd be absolutely charmed to meet one, OP.

IamJuliaJohnson · 17/10/2021 07:23

We have a child with a name that could be viewed as similar - big historical figure, freed an oppressed people, great leader. Not a biblical name per se (but does feature briefly in the bible). He does need a big personality to carry it off, and it’s one of those names that is so unusual that he often is know just by his forename. We’ve yet to meet another but I know of some others. It’s been fine, great even. I’d say use it if you like it.

Newuser82 · 17/10/2021 07:24

It’s a gorgeous name

ofwarren · 17/10/2021 07:35

Love it

Karou · 17/10/2021 07:35

I have a Moses, he is a young adult now. I actually wanted to call him Mose and that’s how I always introduce him but everyone lengthens it. He really likes his name and has never had any trouble or unrealistic expectations because of it.
I don’t know why it’s never been popular, Chris Martin and Gwyneth named their son Moses after I used it so I thought I was setting a trend but apparently not Grin.

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 17/10/2021 08:10

Thank you everyone! So many lovely reaponses! I'm so happy (and pleasantly surprised!) by the comments - I was half expecting everyone to say it was too much/horrible/too religious etc. I love it Smile

Moses supposes his toes are roses
But Moses supposed erroneously…

There are better names to use in the modern world.

HoldingTheDoor · 17/10/2021 08:52

It's a horrible name. I do not understand the appeal at all. It has such an unattractive sound and it's not one I think many people could make it work.

Dilbertian · 17/10/2021 09:16

I'd hate for everyone to smirk and think "That child is so NOT a Moses!"

What nonsense.

I know two Moseses, though neither are younger than me. One is the life and soul of the party, the other is quiet and solid. Both inhabit their names perfectly.

It's a fine name.

Well, it seems the people of the Mumsnet baby naming board beg to differ Grin

30 years ago a friend called her ds Moses... Within a year she was using his mn instead....
I have a Gabriel... Just as nice ime!!

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 17/10/2021 11:29

Looking at my older son, who also has an OT name, I think Moses would really suit him. He's mixed-race with lovely, curly brown hair and big brown eyes and he is cheeky and independent and very, very kind. If big brother suits Moses, I suppose there's a good chance that little brother will Smile

Out of interest, when you think of a child called Moses, does a particular image come to mind? Like, for example, when I think of a Barney I imagine him lovely and chubby and blonde with rosey cheeks and wellington boots. Or a Jasper would be slim and wide eyed and polite with curly brown hair. Do you get any images from the name Moses? (I know this is silly, subjective, and essentially meaningless, but I like it nonetheless Grin )

I am also the people of the baby naming board as the other few posters who didn't think it'd work. My negative opinion is as valid as any other or did you only want positive opinions? If you ask for opinions you're going to get them.

I like Moses, I think you should choose it.

MiddlesexGirl · 17/10/2021 11:40

I love Moses. I have a friend with that name. Fwiw it seems quite popular in black communities - my friend is black - but I do know a young white Moses and thought nothing of it beyond it being a lovely name.
