For a boy (of course).

Looking for a biblical/saint name.

What are your thoughts?

I agree with another poster, it’s a pretty ‘heavy’ name even though it’s beautiful.
If you like something from the Old Testament, how about Jacob / James?

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 17/10/2021 11:41

@HoldingTheDoor

Well, it seems the people of the Mumsnet baby naming board beg to differ

I am also the people of the baby naming board as the other few posters who didn't think it'd work. My negative opinion is as valid as any other or did you only want positive opinions? If you ask for opinions you're going to get them.

Are you always such a ray of sunshine? 😂

Honestly following your update you seem quite unnecessarily rude and hostile so I thknk I'll dismiss your opinion as being unpleasant for the sake of it. Grin

@user1493494961

I like Moses, I think you should choose it.
I think I have decided on it to be honest! I already loved it but all the positive responses have convinced me 🥰

Another one for “quite heavy”. Though DH and I intend to call a future pet Rottweiler Moishe (the more modern Hebrew derivative) should we ever get one, so that’s a bit of a niche perspective.

No, I just think it's a hideous name and it's pathetic when people ask for opinions then get annoyed when they receive them but apologies for not saying "It's gorgeous, Hun!"

Haha! I think that's a great name for a rottweiler! (I have a future pet Rottweiler too, but I haven't named him yet Grin)

If I'm honest, we are very religious and any name we go on to choose will probably be rather 'heavy'. Our other children have very religious names too. So the heaviness (if it's in a religious sense) doesn't bother us. I think that's actually the appeal.

I rest my case.

FWIW My DS, whose name is Mose or Moses, is atheist and white. I actually named him after the musician Mose Allison.
He does hate the rhyme “Moses supposes” but to my knowledge no one has ever raised an eyebrow at a white atheist having a strong biblical name.

toastofthetown · 17/10/2021 15:41

I love the name Moses. I don’t think the rhyme is an issue. My name is in a song which was annoying when I was a child but not traumatic.

BodgertheJogger · 17/10/2021 16:12

Love it.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 17/10/2021 16:21

Absolutely love it!

AuntDympna · 17/10/2021 23:06

Good grief! Some interesting views here. I am surprised how controversial it is, it is just a lovely name.

TurnUpTurnip · 17/10/2021 23:10

I know quite a few people called Moses, common name in black communities as someone already said, so never thought of it as strange or out there

XiCi · 17/10/2021 23:14

Love it

AliceinBorderland · 17/10/2021 23:16

I'm not keen on it. Don't know why.

Saint names rather than prophets:

Mark
Luke
John

Etc

WeasilyPleased · 17/10/2021 23:21

The Moses I know is 36, tall, dishy and black.

Tulips15 · 17/10/2021 23:28

I know a Moses.
Unfortunately a rhyme was made up about him in school and it stuck.
He nn was Mo though and Thats what I will always know him as. Nice guy.

Im personally not keen on the name.

Luke might be one of the middle names (we usually have 2; bit of a family tradition!) Smile

I went to school with a Moses. It was fine.

CelebrateAndDream · 18/10/2021 06:34

@HoldingTheDoor

It's a horrible name. I do not understand the appeal at all. It has such an unattractive sound and it's not one I think many people could make it work.

There's 'disagreeing'...and then there's 'completely and utterly rude'.

Have a think about which box your reply fits in.

JakeyRolling · 18/10/2021 06:57

I think biblical names largely fall into two categories- Biblical Traditional (Andrew, Joseph, Mary) and Biblical Total (Isiah, Jeddiah, Methuselah).

But I think Moses is one of those ones that falls slap bang between the two and is the same vibe as Amos.

I don't just think OT, I think Paper Moon and 1920s/30s America.

Not one that I'd choose but definitely not one that would make me think WTF.

ladycarlotta · 18/10/2021 09:33

I think it's lovely! I'm also surprised it's not more popular than it is. Go for it.

Chachachawoo · 18/10/2021 09:33

Sounds like you love the name so go for it.
My son has a big name, also biblical... got told when he was a baby it was a lot to live up to etc...
I wanted something strong and meaningful.
