Oisin

We’re thinking of Oisín for baby boy due early next year! DH loves the name and it’s growing on me.

What other names do you think of when hearing Oisín?

What do you personally think of the name?

What nicknames?

Lastly, we live in Ireland and bub will have Irish and French passport. Is using a fada going to be too complicated? I’m thinking admin and French people.

Thoughts?

As in (H)Oisin sauce? Or am I not pronouncing it correctly?

DeireadhFomhair · 08/10/2021 07:21

Oisín is a lovely name 😊
Can't see any problems with the fada, it's what gives it the pronunciation. French people don't give up their accents.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 08/10/2021 07:23

Nice name. Its on our list.
Not sure about french angle though may be a bit unpronouncable.

We are also looking at aiden and liam.
(But Liam is a bit controversial in our house)

Mybalconyiscracking · 08/10/2021 07:23

It’s a great name. Pronounced Uh-sheen, I guess?

M0rT · 08/10/2021 07:25

It's pronounced Ush-een, but to be honest English people always mangle it.
There is an Oisín on the radio who has on an English sports commentator who calls him Ocean 😂
I like it OP, you need the fada for pronunciation in Irish. It's what gives the ee sound. Could probably leave it off the French passport if you think it would be an issue?
The only Oisíns I know with nicknames have them from the surname.
Similar to me names are Rían, Cian, Caoimhín.

Cazzovuoi · 08/10/2021 07:26

Lovely name. The fada shouldn’t cause issues, the French have the accent!

Cazzovuoi · 08/10/2021 07:26

Woefully incorrect. It takes 30 seconds to google the pronunciation Hmm
celestebellman · 08/10/2021 07:32

I really like Oisin - and if you are in Ireland at least people will know how to pronounce it.

Rosiiiiie · 08/10/2021 07:32

@LivingLaVidaBabyShower we already have a Liam! So hard to find a name I like as much as Liam!!

I have an Oisín! Also in Ireland, never had any issues with pronunciation here or in Scotland and only once or twice in England.

His siblings/friends call him Osh/Oshy sometimes, but he generally gets the full thing.

HandScreen · 08/10/2021 07:47

Oisín is a gorgeous name. Nn is Ois (as in Ush).

ManifestingJoy · 08/10/2021 07:49

Im in Ireland so Id think nothimg.

If you're i france id worry theyd read it as wassan

Luckystar1 · 08/10/2021 07:50

I absolutely love Oisin. You’ll have no problems in Ireland. I wanted to call my DS this bit we lived in England at the time and my DH is English and I couldn’t bare having such a beautiful name constantly mispronounced.

As to the PP with the awful hoisin reference…. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

alpinerain · 08/10/2021 07:51

I love Orion which is similar.Smile

ManifestingJoy · 08/10/2021 07:51

What about Diarmuid? Equally as distinguished sounding. My french isnt great but ... Ois = Wah ?

Choux · 08/10/2021 07:56

@Cazzovuoi 'Woefully incorrect. It takes 30 seconds to google the pronunciation'

Not everyone who comes into contact with little Oisin will have 30 seconds to google the pronunciation. Irish names often have unusual pronunciations and teachers, doctors receptionists, doctors, driving instructors etc will all be on the spot and making woefully incorrect pronunciations.

Friends who hear it spoken will ask Oisin how it's spelt and may spell it incorrectly.

These aren't reasons not to choose the name but parents should be aware that these situations will happen regularly throughout their child's life.

DeireadhFomhair · 08/10/2021 07:58

Living in Ireland I have lots of friends who have a Liam, they have brothers called:
Oisín
Cathal
Fionn
Darragh
Cillian
Seán
Cian
Lorcan
Daithí

Lots of great names!

SalsaLove · 08/10/2021 08:00

Reminds me of Foil Arms and Hog

The OP said they live in Ireland, this will not be a problem in Ireland! It's a perfectly normal, popular name.

DFOD · 08/10/2021 08:13

Beautiful name literal translation as “young deer” alongside deep cultural and classical legendary significance - perfect - wish I had called my son this name!

Wolfiefan · 08/10/2021 08:21

Love it. Live in England but wouldn’t find the pronunciation hard at all.

CaffiSaliMali · 08/10/2021 08:26

Oisín's a great name and people will be able to pronounce it in Ireland. The Welsh version, Osian (osh-ann) is the top of my list. The legend of Niamh and Oisín/Nia a Osian gives the name a nice literary feel too.

I would keep the fada, at least on his BC and Irish passport.

KirstenBlest · 08/10/2021 08:36

Keep the fada.
Try it out on some french people.

Me too! I love Barry.
LizzieAnt · 08/10/2021 11:21

Barry is brilliant Grin

Oisín is lovely OP. I'd definitely keep the fada as you're in Ireland, and the French have accents too. (I'm not sure how they'll pronounce the name though.)
