Aubree was a mistake, as you now realise, a male name really misspelled in a very modern way. Dollie and Kittie are so babyish and sugary. OK as short forms of Dorothy and Katherine.

If you are aiming for a 1920s/30s vintage, I like Cecilia and Audrey as previously suggested. Celia, Rosalind and Sylvia are also nice.

Btw a 'y' ending to Dolly, Kitty etc looks much better and sounds the same but I agree that these are per names for a more complete name.

Patsy, Dollie, Kitty, Betsy... this is a person not a little dog!

Katyppp · 10/10/2021 12:34

Posted too soon. If people want their daughters to be taken seriously stop giving them such silly, cutsie and babyish names

millzcrawf · 10/10/2021 13:10

@Katyppp how are the names on my list silly and babyish? These names go way back, I had a great-great grandma dolly.

Dolly Parton has done pretty well with her name, and boys names such as Teddy is pretty popular at the moment, and has the same feel.

Denise Van Outen and Lee Mead have a daughter named Betsy.

Nothing wrong with names such as Patsy or Kitty etc. Why is a name like Nancy considered acceptable (and who decides?!), but Patsy isn’t?

Katyppp · 10/10/2021 15:01

Given the ridiculous names some celebs dumpd on their offspring, I'm not sure what Denise van Outen's daughter's name proves!
Look, I know there have always been names like these around (although I imagine they were used as shortened nicknames rather than given names) but I cringe when I hear another baby called names such as these.
They make me think the parents haven't the imagination to realise their little cutie will one day be a grown-up with a cutie name.
I know fashions change and in 30 years time Betsy and Teddy might be perfectly acceptable names for high-flying CEOs but it is hard to imagine that now and I personally would not take the risk.

Standrewsschool · 10/10/2021 15:19

@Katyppp
Just because you personally don’t like the name, that doesn’t mean that others can’t choose the names they like.

Names like George and Harry were considered really old fashioned when I was growing up, and I was amazed when a friend named her child Grace in the 90s. How dated! I never imagined how popular theses names would become.

han01uk · 10/10/2021 15:22

Dorothy (nn Dottie) ?! I love that!

Katyppp · 10/10/2021 15:41

@Standrewsschool I agree and can remember when names such as Jack and Alfie were very unusual and usually babies with these names were usually reluctantly named after relatives or given 'family' names.
I am well aware that I am not the arbiter of taste by the way and realise people can call their babies what they like🙄
It just doesn't sit well with me that on one hand, we want our daughters to be strong, independent women yet on the other hand we give them such silly, babyish names.

MumofSpud · 10/10/2021 15:56

I have an Esme Violet and a Betsy (cat!)

Other names I like:

I live Kitty. It's much more grown up sounding to me than Katie or Annie (not that I especially dislike those but they just seem girlie to me whereas Kitty seems mature and dignified, possibly because I knew some elderly ones when I was a child).

I have an Iris. To me it’s old, pretty but strong and not cutesy. We get lots of compliments on it.

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 10/10/2021 21:31

I always loved Harriet (but didn’t go with my sons name), Elizabeth, Tessa and Henrietta (nn Etta).
