Would you say Tah-lee-uh or tar-lee-uh?

Am I the only one sitting here saying "Bali" and "Barley" to myself, and still unable to hear any difference

No they are exactly the same!

SionnachRua · 06/10/2021 22:26

Side note: had actually never heard of Susannah or Trevor before (is this an example of SE England assuming everyone knows their public figures?). Enjoying a YouTube upload of a Trevor doc very much right now.

He absolutely, unquestionably, 100% has an accent and I'm sure all these lads in prison he's interviewing would agree.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/10/2021 22:27

Bali and barley sound exactly the same in certain accents.

Some of you need to leave your home village once in a while. There are different accents lurking beyond them there hills.

HeronLanyon · 06/10/2021 22:29

@Smellsliketeenwhiskey

It’s my name.

It’s Tally-ah.

Tally Ho !

I’ve never heard Tally - ah but I like it.

RebeccaCloud9 · 06/10/2021 22:31

@Flickeringgreenlight in my accent, they ALL have the same a/ar/ah sound. Midlands.

(Barney, barn, Bali, far, car, amen, father. All the same)

RebeccaCloud9 · 06/10/2021 22:31

Wish we had a voice note option so I could hear all the lovely different accents saying these things, it's fascinating! Grin

They don’t even need to leave their villages. Just turn on the TV or watch some YouTube. Accents from all over the place. I’m really stunned that so many people cant think of an accent where these words sound different to how they say it.
RebeccaCloud9 · 06/10/2021 22:32

@GemLooper I would say Tah leah (emphasis on Tah, sounds like ta/thanks)

BluebellsareBlue · 06/10/2021 22:41

Where is the R coming from????? It's tah Lee ah. Wtf is going on with people adding an R????

Nobody as adding an actual sounded r , they are trying to type it as they would say it in their accent. So to them (and me) the word tar, as in the black stuff which you put on roads, is pronounced the same as ta, as in the shortened slang form of thank you. As a PP said it rhymes with la the way Julie Andrews sang it in The Sound of Music. We don't sound the r at the end of tar. When we write Tar-lee-a we do not intend for the r to be sounded.

People with other accents do sound the r and so for them tar does not sound like ta or rhyme with la.

BubbleCoffee · 06/10/2021 23:39

Or home city North London or the Home Counties...

It's not just the 'r' that's the issue though RichardMarxisInnocent. The 'a' sound is different too. So I think the way I pronounce ta is different to the way you say ta. For me it rhymes with la as in Lala (the teletubby), not the note.

CorianderAndCream · 07/10/2021 00:06

Taaa- lee- ah

CorianderAndCream · 07/10/2021 00:07

@OhLordyWhatNow

There's no R in Bali 😵‍💫 if there was it would be the same as barley.
They're both pronounced the same in my accent
CorianderAndCream · 07/10/2021 00:08

@SunsetOverEasterIsland

It probably depends if you are from the North or the South. In the North it would be Tal ee a ( a as in Apple) but in the South, probably Tar lee ah. It's a bit like Bath or Baarth 😁
Nope I'm northern and it's still a long a
CiaoForNiao · 07/10/2021 00:16

@JassyRadlett

Tah Lee uh, where the ‘tah’ rhymes with ‘lah’ the exact way Julie Andrews pronounces it in ‘la, a note to follow soh’ in The Sound of Music.

(Which is also the same as tar in my non-rhotic accent, and rhymes with baa, car, far, and the first syllables of Bali and barley.)

Same for me.
CiaoForNiao · 07/10/2021 00:20

Lala and la (the note) sound the same Confused

KloppsTeeth · 07/10/2021 00:22

I know a Talia. She is Tah-Lee-ah but she gets the nickname Jenny from Genitalia a lot at school so she hates her name. I know geniTalia and tah-Lee-ah don’t sound the same, but these are young teens and think they are oh so hilarious.

I think I should have spelt it Laa-Laa actually... Anyway, they don't to me. Just watched some Teletubbies on YouTube to check Grin
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/10/2021 00:58

For some Scottish people poor pour and paw all sound different

So funny,they all sound the same to me, I can't get them to sound different 😂

Tah lee ah

careerchangeperhaps · 07/10/2021 01:01

Tally-a

Balonzette · 07/10/2021 04:32

Tal-ee-uh.

It wouldn't be Tar-lee-uh unless spelt differently.

Balonzette · 07/10/2021 04:34

Barley and Bali are pronounced the same. If anyone is saying either differently then they're just wrong 😂

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 07/10/2021 04:50

@BluebellsareBlue

It’s not that confusing - I pronounce ‘tar’ exactly the same way I pronounce ‘tah’. Many, many people with non-rhotic accents do.

Bar, car, star - all pronounced like ‘la’ in my (Kiwi) accent. Most people with London, Home Counties, etc accents would also pronounce these words the same way.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 07/10/2021 04:51

@Balonzette

Imagine ‘barley’ said in an Irish accent. It really doesn’t sound like Bali.

Are you saying they’re pronouncing it wrong?

Have someone of your never watched TV….? Confused
