Mey/Mei

Would you pronounce it like May or My?

Which one do you prefer if you had to choose?

OP posts:

RuthW · 21/09/2021 21:47

I'd pronounce it me

knittingaddict · 21/09/2021 21:49

Without really knowing or seeing any replies - May.

Peanutsandchilli · 21/09/2021 21:51

I'd pronounce as May. Mei, I'd assume you were Asian. Mey, I'd assume you were illiterate.

Blindleadingtheblind · 21/09/2021 21:51

You asked for opinions OP and you got them. Not everyone would choose the name you've picked but it's your child, your choice. Mei is far nicer, but I'd assume you're of Chinese/Malaysian heritage just taking the name at face value.

CorianderAndCream · 21/09/2021 21:57

Both would be May to me.

Mai would be My to me

ChimChimeny · 21/09/2021 21:58

It rhymes with Hey but not Hay.

I really can't pronounce these differently 🤣

WoozySnoozy · 21/09/2021 21:58

@ChimChimeny

It rhymes with Hey but not Hay.

I really can't pronounce these differently 🤣

Me neither!
Badabingbadabum · 21/09/2021 21:59

May, because I knew a Mei and that's how her name was pronounced.

Mymapuddlington · 21/09/2021 22:02

Hey and hay both pronounced exactly the same surely?!

Burnamer · 21/09/2021 22:03

@Peanutsandchilli

I'd pronounce as May. Mei, I'd assume you were Asian. Mey, I'd assume you were illiterate.

Sometimes nicknames are a bit different from the lengthened forms: Liz, Libby, Beth for Elizabeth; Harry for Henry; Stacey for Anastasia. So I don’t necessarily think the spelling has to tie you down. Even if the 1st 2 letters are Me - you could always go with may or mae if you want.

I haven’t seen the spelling mey and it looks a bit odd. I would assume someone called mei was East Asian.

LikeTheOceansWeRise · 21/09/2021 22:04

Never seen so much attitude on a baby name thread 🤣

I am loving the sass!

Could you give her a nice middle name and just use that as her main name, rather than trying to make Mei/Mey a thing?

Burnamer · 21/09/2021 22:04

I’d rhyme Met with Key and Mei with Eye.

In the nicest possible way though I think this is a bit nuts. If you want to pronounce it May then choose a spelling that people will recognise as that. Mae seems to be the most obvious one.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 21/09/2021 22:06

I’d pronounce Mei as May

I’d assume Mey was a typo. If pushed, I’d pronounce it Mee.

Rosesareyellow · 21/09/2021 22:07

May, Mai and Mae are all common enough (as in every other girl about 10 years ago was named ‘Something-Mae’.) It’s a really nice name but changing the spelling doesn’t to something ‘youneeque’ which your child will have to correct until the end of her days doesn’t make it any more special or exciting. It just screams ‘my parents can’t spell’ or ‘my parents thought they were being clever but they are the opposite…’ this is coming from someone whose parents spelled their daughter’s very average name in a way no one else would think of.

MadameOvary81 · 21/09/2021 22:17

Mei is far nicer but like others have said, i'd assume Asian heritage.

Mey makes me say Meh...like blah. It's bad...please don't use it.

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 21/09/2021 22:18

My daughter's name is Eve and she is known to us as 'Evie-Stevie'. I would have had an attack of the vapours when pregnant if I thought my PFB would be known as anything so classless Grin

Embroidery · 21/09/2021 22:28

Meh isnt very positive.

May is far better

TatianaBis · 21/09/2021 22:38

Mei - I’d assume she was Chinese - I know a Mei Chen and a Mei Ying.

hogangog · 21/09/2021 22:39

@MrsFin Meirion when said the proper Welsh way is May-ree-on. Lots of people in the South (where less Welsh is spoken) would say My-ree-on, but that's not the correct phonetic pronounciation.

@iwantknowyouropinion i think that where you live in the country (assuming UK somewhere) will make a difference in this. where are you?

QuestionEverythingBaby · 21/09/2021 22:46

@PeriChristmas

Mei is the nicest spelling. Not sure why all the cageyness though.... what's your mum in law's name??

Maybe it's Maybelline?

EnidFrighten · 21/09/2021 22:46

I wouldn't know how to pronounce those spellings without guidance and I'd think Mey was a typo. Just use the proper bloody name May. Nicknames come organically, you don't preplan them.

lalafafa · 21/09/2021 22:48

@SuePream

I'm not overkeen on Mei or Mey. How about Eypril or Joon instead.

My Thai masseuse is called Mae (pronounced May)

sunflowerdaisies · 22/09/2021 00:01

I'd definitely pronounce Mei as May but Mey I wouldn't be sure, makes me think Meh so this would be my last choice of all the ways to spell May.

I disagree nicknames should be organic necessarily like some pp have said. One of our names we liked but didn't have enough boys was Alex - we'd have given the name Alexander formally but would have been know as Alex.
