Really like this name, but how popular is it? I prefer if a name is a little unusual. I've tried Google but get a bit confused with American sites. How popular do you think it is in the UK?

I love the name ambrose! I do not know anyone with the name here but I have always loved that name 🙂

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/09/2021 18:51

Too much like Ambrosia rice pudding.

Requestit · 16/09/2021 18:52

😬 oh dear

dementedma · 16/09/2021 18:53

I actually like it

Verbena87 · 16/09/2021 18:53

Never met one: love it a lot. My husband vetoed due to custard but I don’t really want people who don’t like custard anywhere near my baby anyway so 🤷‍♀️

spicedappledonuts · 16/09/2021 18:54

I like it but some people will think of rice pudding and custard.

CourgetteGlutTony · 16/09/2021 18:55

I was at school with an Ambrose, it’s a perfectly normal name. Don’t remember any custard jokes

Ellmau · 16/09/2021 18:55

I like it. It's pretty unusual.

BadgeronaMoped · 16/09/2021 18:56

Never heard of it in the UK, I'm sure there are a few here and there though. Brings to mind a kindly elderly American beekeeper. Also, Ambrosia!

NewNameADayKeepsSpiesAtBay · 16/09/2021 18:56

I may be wrong but I think it’s a boys name, and I dislike it as such because it has Rose in which is feminine. But the sound of it is very pleasant and as a girls name it would be great. Although possibly akin to naming a girl Jonathan or another definitely boy name and therefore also problematic.

BikeRunSki · 16/09/2021 19:02

I know 1. He’s very much in the UK. He’s late 50s. I’ve never met another, to the best of my knowledge neither has he (I know him very well). The rice pudding thing doesn’t last, it’s a non-issue that people always bring up when Ambrose is mentioned on this board.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 16/09/2021 19:04

Never met one and totally love it. There is a plaque from the 19th century in our village to an Ambrose and I've always thought it was such a lovely name.

Velvetbee · 16/09/2021 19:05

Really like it.

LakeShoreD · 16/09/2021 19:07

Did you get it from the new Sabrina series? I think that’s mostly behind the surge in popularity U.K. the US. As a Brit I can’t shake the rice pudding association though, my late Grandmother was very fond of the stuff.

iklboo · 16/09/2021 19:07

English male character in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I like it.

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/09/2021 19:08

I think it's a boys name too.

OrangeStrawberryPlum · 16/09/2021 19:23

I didnt know it was in a TV programme. I've always like the name. I just want to know really if people think it unusual? Or can any one tell me how it ranks in the UK?

And yes it's a boys name :)

Dinosauraddict · 16/09/2021 19:24

I've never heard it as a name. All I immediately thought was 'custard'.

toastofthetown · 16/09/2021 19:35

I love Ambrose. I was unfamiliar with the Sabrina association though, and that puts me off a bit.

In terms of popularity, t's a very usual name. Only 18 born in 2019. Looking at the data it doesn't seem to be heading massively upwards now, so you'd be ahead of the trend if you used it. It's one of the names I'm in curious to serif it's had a notable increase in 2020 - will find out Oct/Nov.

PurBal · 16/09/2021 19:40

I love it. Was my Grandfathers name and wanted to use it for DS but got vetoed.

goldenrachita · 16/09/2021 19:42

Genuinely unusual.

Have a look at names.darkgreener.com

PigeonPigPie · 16/09/2021 19:45

I love it! Reminds me of St Ambrose - he's the patron saint of beekeepers Halo

FindMeInTheSunshine · 16/09/2021 19:49

I loved the Abbey Girl books by Elsie Oxenham and there was an Ambrose in those, and I always liked the name. I think it would be a nice unusual name which suits a baby and an adult. both

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/09/2021 19:53

Great! There was an Ambrose in my school a few years ago and he was absolutely lovely, so obviously I'm biased but I do think it's a good name, strong and memorable without trying to be 'unique'.
