Really like this name, but how popular is it? I prefer if a name is a little unusual. I've tried Google but get a bit confused with American sites. How popular do you think it is in the UK?

I really like it!

thecognoscenti · 16/09/2021 19:55

I like it a lot. A distant relative (not English) is called Ambrose and it's always stood out for me.

I've always thought of it as a surname. We bought a house off the footballer Darren Ambrose so that's what comes to mind. I like it though

I know a two year old boy called Ambrose

Patron Saint of Bees, I love that!

I love it although it reminds me of someone from emerdale or last of the summer wind. Don't know why!

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 16/09/2021 20:11

My favourite ever boys name. Gorgeous.

Forestcantrun · 16/09/2021 20:12

Reasonably popular name in some areas in ROI. I like it. It's easy to say, straightforward to spell and very traditional.

Never once associated it with custard.

Me too! Maybe there was one in either of those? Farmer leaning over a gate, chewing a piece of straw. I know someone with it as a middle name. Didn't think of the custard connection.
IncorrigibleTitmouse · 16/09/2021 20:22

I love it! Sounds very refined.

MondeoFan · 16/09/2021 20:24

I think it's cute
We have a book here and one of the main characters is called Ambrose. That's the only time I've heard of it

sarahc336 · 16/09/2021 20:25

Makes me think of custard sorry x

Cissyandflora · 16/09/2021 20:27

Rice
Also custard

Eileen101 · 16/09/2021 20:28

We have a family member who is an Ambrose, around 12 years old. It was also my great grandfather's name.

Wowwellokthen · 16/09/2021 20:28

It's my cat's name....I like it obviously

Datsandcogs · 16/09/2021 20:39

I really don’t like it. I think it sounds wet, maybe it’s the custard association.

thewhatsit · 16/09/2021 20:55

Ballykissangel SmileSmileSmile

Love it

And yes, it’s the ONS data you want. They publish all of the data every year. The Darkgreener site uses the ONS data. Ambrose is 1369th in the charts!

PaolaDiLorenzo · 16/09/2021 21:30

There was a younger boy named Ambrose at my DS'S school, and lots of the other pupils used to call him Rosie.
I think.it' could be possibly setting him up for being teased.

CanofCant · 16/09/2021 22:04

I absolutely love this name and want to use it for this baby but DH hates it. I thought I had come to terms with having it vetoed but now your post has reminded me of how much I want to use it 😭

According to darkgreener only 18 baby boys were named Ambrose last year.

Vbree · 16/09/2021 22:07

Makes me think of rice pudding

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/09/2021 22:18

Very patrician - kind of retro posh. It does have a really lovely sound and meaning though so I can see why you are tempted! I don't think I'd be brave enough myself - the Welsh version Emrys feels easier to live with somehow to me.

FrangipaniBlue · 16/09/2021 22:46

I love it but then I'm biased because it's DS middle name Grin

Miliao · 16/09/2021 23:13

I’ve only met one in the UK, but it’s quite popular in the West Indies (the one I i knew was from there too).

Blubells · 16/09/2021 23:27

Love Ambrose!
